1Password is not remembering wrong field as username

I'm finding lately that 1P is remembering something other than the correct username as the username. The last few times it has saved the answer to a secret question as the username. Nothing has changed on my Mac in quite a while other than regular software updates (App Store and other).

The usual solution for problems like this is to re-create and save the login manually. That allows 1P to re-learn what it needs to know about the relevant login page. Have you tried that?

    Edit: I've assumed you're using 1P4 or 1P5.

    Hi @cypress,

That's certainly odd. I'd be curious to know what pages 1Password is saving information on that resulted in that. Are you trying to get 1Password to automatically save secret questions for you? I've only ever added them manually to a Login item so never stumbled upon this issue.

Certainly Stephen_C's suggestion is a solid route to take to resolve this although what you're seeing is unusual.

We look forward to hearing a little more about it if you don't mind.

I am on the most current version. I have been using 1P since soon after it launched and have never required it to do anything other than what it does out of the box. i.e. I do not tweak the setup. As much as saving something manually is a workaround I don't see it as a viable solution when I've saved 400+ logins without any intervention.

Tonight, again (twice that I know of), it saved a security question as my username and I am really tired of this. The government site www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca registration process includes a security question. The security question is not a new concept but it seems to buffalo 1P all of a sudden. I'm happy to help sort it out one on one with someone at AgileBits but not across a message board.

The reason to save a login manually when something stops working is that web sites sometimes change things under the hood. When that happens, your auto saved record, which includes details about which fields are where, can change. As a result, your original record doesn't map correctly to the login page.

I have also found a few sites that are so weirdly constructed that the automatic save doesn't work. Manual save sometimes does.

Anyway, I'd encourage you to be a little more willing to give it a try.

    Hi @cypress,

We really appreciate your long-time support of 1Password! Asking you for version information is simply our first step in attempting to re-create the issue - because things in software can change so quickly, there's no point to trying to see how 1Password behaves in version 5.1 if you are using version 4.4.3, for example.

As Hawkmoth says, manually saving a new Login is the best way to help 1Password re-learn what it needs to fill in, and where.

I'm curious: is 1Password incorrectly filling on these sites? Or is it simply a matter of the security question showing up in your Login?

Because the registration page of a site often includes more detail than the Login page, I can see 1Password gathering a bit of extra information when you save your details there. If you re-save a Login on the site's log in screen (as is suggested above) 1Password will save the correct details and fills quite nicely. (I've just tested here with the URL you included, and 1Password does fill correctly.)

I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns!
