What are tags? (When I click 'folders and tags' in the User Guide, I get the message that "the topic I requested cannot be found")

I have to agree with you that, at least on the basis of my quick glance, the knowledge base seems very coy on the question of tags. :) Let me try to help.

Tags are simply a form of metadata. You can tag any item with any tag you like: you just make up the name of the tag. Once you've done that the tag can be displayed (or hidden) in the left panel of the main app. If you click on a tag name in that panel all the items so tagged will be displayed.

You may ask what is the use of that. Personally, I use tags to link a login (for example, for a bank) to another relevant item (for example, the bank account details). If I click on the tag I can display both (or all) relevant items at once. You could also use tags, for example, to label no longer used Login items—which you might then eventually decide to move to an archive vault.

I hope that helps but please post again if you have more questions.

    Hi @flibberty,

Yes, being told that the topic requested cannot be found isn't too enlightening when you've gone in search of details. Until we sort that 'blip' here's a link to our Windows version which explains folders and tags in a small amount of detail - https://guides.agilebits.com/1password-windows/4/en/topic/working-with-folders-and-tags There is the distinct possibility that you won't feel that more knowledgeable after even that though.

Our folders are pretty basic. As I said in your other thread you can't tell what folder an item is contained in. Like files on your computer an item can only exist in a single folder and folders are hierarchal (so a folder can exist in another folder).

Our tags though seem more useful, at least to me. An item can be tagged with as many tags as you like but each tag is separate, you can't create hierarchies of tags (unless you count particular naming conventions that you might use). Tags also stay with an item if you move it between vaults, a property I made extensive use of prior to Wi-Fi Syncing supporting secondary vaults. As a result my secondary vault is completely tagged and I used a smart folder (search) to see if any items were untagged.

Both represent additional ways for you to try and organise your items in another way from our basic categories.

One organisational scheme I still haven't gotten round to fully implementing is to tag all my internet stores with what credit/debit card they have registered (if any). That way when I change the expiry date and possibly the long number of a card I can easily see what places have the now redundant information. As I say, a good idea which I still haven't done. It might give you an idea or the starting point for you own ideas though.

Tags can be useful also in latest OS X

Just to be clear though, tags in 1Password are separate from tags used in other places e.g. OS X, Apple's Mail application etc.

Just want to make sure there isn't any confusion over a possible OS integration as that doesn't exist.

Thanks, but how do I tag something? As far as I can see I have to edit each password one by one by typing in the name the tag in the tag field. Is there no list of tags that can be chosen, or a way to tag a number of passwords at the same time?

A tag is created when you first type it. Just edit a 1P item in the main app, go to the tag field and type the tag you want, press Enter and it will appear in your tag list. Once you have created it you can select other items from the list in the main app (you can ⌃ click to select a number of items) and then drag those items to the tag in the left panel to apply the tag to all of them. It takes longer to explain it than it takes to do it!

I think Stephen_c is spot on with that final comment, once you've tried it once you will probably find it far easier to do than it is to explain.

We don't have predefined tags as I'm not sure any list would ever prove useful, much better to let the user decide what tags they want.

If you have any further questions do please ask.
