Import 1Password data and settings
I recently started over with a new instance Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite and would like to import my 1Password data from my old Mavericks drive. I have a backup of the old drive, but it is not bootable. This means its not easy to launch the old version of 1Password and "Backup" and create a .agilekeychain file.
I've looked in ~/Library/Containers/ and there is no folder named "2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper". That folder does exist in the ~/Library/Application Scripts/ folder, but it didn't contain the Backup folder. I did find two backup files in ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/, but they are out of date and show 0 profiles, 0 items, 0 folders, and 0 attachments (aka blank .1p4_zip files).
So I've selected "Restore from Backup", but can't find any files worth selecting. Am I looking in the wrong place? There has to be a way to bring my data over without booting and exporting from the old OS.

Hi @codemech,
Now I could be well off base with this particular thought but it's one worth eliminating as a possibility at least.
If I need to instruct a user on how to reach a particular folder I often supply the path in a form so that they paste it directly into Finder's Go to Folder... window. I will always use the
~
as that translates to the user's profile without us needing to know exactly what the username is. For example on my test machine I have an account with long username LittleBobbyTables and short username LBT so on that machine~/
will translate to/Users/LBT/
So I'm wondering when you say
~/Library/
are you referring to the Library folder on your backup drive or are mistakingly viewing your currentLibrary
folder in your freshly created filesystem.Certainly you are looking in the correct location in the Library folder for either the Agile Web Store (AWS) or Mac App Store (MAS) version of 1Password.
If you are an AWS user the exact location of the backup folder is
.../Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Backups/
. I'm using ... here as the ~ won't be accurate for a backup drive. If you are a MAS user the exact location of the backup folder is
.../Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/Library/Backups/
If I'm completely mistaken and misjudged your level of skill I do apologise. I am assuming you were running 1Password 4 on your Mavericks machine as 1Password 3 does store its files in a different folder. If that's the case then looking in
.../Library/Application Support/1Password/
should yield a1Password.agilekeychain
which was how we stored your vault in 1Password 3.Do please keep us informed.

Hi littlebobbytables,
Thanks for trying to help. I realize that ~ is a shortcut to the user's home folder. And that in this case, I have both a user folder on my new drive, and a different user folder on my backup. So to answer your question, yes, I'm trying to import 1Password settings from my backup and not from the new drive. The new drive wouldn't have any settings to import.

Hi @codemech,
Sorry, it can be very hard to correctly gauge the level of expertise of a user we haven't conversed with before so apologies.
Assuming you haven't synced to an outside service such as Dropbox or iCloud and everything was local to your Mavericks machine then there are only three places to look.
~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/
for AWS~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/
for MAS~/Library/Application Support/1Password/
for 1Password 3
If none of those exist or are all empty something is wrong. Even if the backups are missing based on the paths in my previous post, if you have the data folder that can be used.
For MAS
~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/Library/Data/
For AWS
~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Data/
That could be copied over as the data folder is what a backup contains in 1Password 4/5.
If these folders are empty I can only assume something has gone very wrong in the backup and it doesn't bode well. I hope at the very least your
data
folder is intact. Do let us know.1
