Command Slash broken

Hi Everyone,

Here's the versions of software I'm using:
Chrome 40.0.2214.111 (64-bit)
Yosemite 10.10.2
1Password 5.1
Chrome Extension: 1Password: Password Manager and Secure Wallet 4.2.5.90

I can't seem to get command slash to work on either of my computers any more (macbook pro and macbook air). It just seems to have broken one day. I'm not sure how to troubleshoot the issue at this point. I've updated everything that I can think of.

When I get to a form that used to work with command slash, I can click the 1password extension in the bar (and it pulls up the site I'm on) and I can click it and it populates the form.

I've read through the trouble shooting tips, but I don't think any of the troubleshooting applies to this issue (correct me if I'm wrong).

Thanks,
Ryan

Just an addendum to the above, I tested command slash in Firefox 35.0.1 and the most recent version of the 1Password extension and it still doesn't work.

Just checking in to be sure. The keyboard shortcut is Command + \ (backslash), not forward slash.

    Hi @RyanJones,

To make sure I understand, the 1Password extension works correctly if you click on it and choose a Login, but nothing happens when you try using the keyboard shortcut?

Assuming you're using the correct ⌘\ shortcut, please open the main 1Password app and go to the menu for 1Password > Preferences. On the General tab, you'll see a few keyboard shortcuts. The third one there is "Fill Login on current web page". Is that set to ⌘\ as expected, or has it somehow been changed to something else?

Sorry, I should have made the title "Command Backslash doesn't auto complete". I am using command + backslash.

    @Drew_AG Here are my settings:

I haven't made any changes in the preferences. I did a fresh install on my macbook pro and it does the same thing (no changes). The only thing I've ever done is set it to iCloud sync (which is working correctly).

It definitely works if I choose it from the browser extension shortcut and click the item (let's say I was logging into hipchat, I could go to the hipchat form and then select the login and it works perfectly).

The other shortcuts work to Lock 1Password and to show 1Password mini.

    Hi @RyanJones,

If another application or service that is running also makes uses of this keyboard shortcut that might explain what you're seeing.

One way to confirm could be to try changing the current shortcut, does it start behaving if you change it to something quite different and then revert to being broken when you change back?

I do remember somebody posting that this was the cause for them but sadly I can't remember enough details on the post to successfully find it now.

If you look in System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts and carefully check all the options there you might find something has repurposed this shortcut.

Please do let us know either way what happens though. The results may help narrow down the cause.

Another question now that I think of it. When you click on the 1Password browser extension icon, does the Login item appear at the top of the list right below the search field or do you have to navigate the menus to find it?

    Hi @littlebobbytables,

**Fixed it down below (jump to ** for fix)

I think we're onto something here. I should have tried a new shortcut to begin with. I changed the shortcut to (COMMAND + .) and it seems to be working correctly now! And to answer your question, yes the site shows up in the list. So the extension is definitely working correctly (recognizing the site).

I suspect you're right. Something at a high level is capturing the (COMMAND + ) and swallowing it. Now I'm on a mission. Since my macbook pro is basically a brand new install I should be able to track down what the culprit is.

Does anyone know a way that I see what's capturing the command? It's too bad that this thread didn't follow up with a fix: https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/24146/command-backslash-no-longer-working-moved-to-email it looks like it's the same problem.

** I started writing everything above and started looking for (COMMAND + ) shortcuts in System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts. I didn't see anything that stood out (other than I had some conflicts). I ignored those and then started to go backwards through the items I installed and checked the shortcuts with this app I found: http://www.mediaatelier.com/CheatSheet/

I couldn't find anything so I killed every app I could find. Still nothing. Talk about infuriating. I knew it must have been something to do with the OS. I jumped back into System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts and took a look at the conflicts. It turns out I had 2 items set to (COMMAND + Space). I hit the "Restore Defaults" and now the 1Password (COMMAND + ) was working!

Out of curiosity I went back and set a random shortcut to (COMMAND + Space) and 1Password is still working correctly. I had the exact same problem on both of my machines (Macbook Pro + Macbook Air) and resetting the keyboard to the defaults fixed the problem.

I'm not sure what caused it the issue. I haven't manually made any shortcut changes. Here's a list of apps I've installed on a fresh install of Yosemite.

    • Dash
    • Hyperdock
    • Dropbox
    • Textmate 2
    • Rubymine
    • Clipmenu

Thanks for all of the help :)!

    Hi @RyanJones,

Obviously you've had to do some detective work but I'm glad it has at least resulted in a semi-solution. I have no doubt you'd have been a lot happier to know precisely what the cause was.

Looking at a couple of those apps I first think wow, I like the look of Dash (sorry, that doesn't help you) and then I look at Clipmenu and I wonder if that might be involved. I couldn't find a great amount of detail on the shortcuts but I think it uses ⌘+ for some of it's functions so maybe...

CheetSheet is another good find too.

I think I've gained more from your posting here than we've helped you with. Just to say that isn't normally how it's meant to go but that's two interesting applications I wasn't aware of before so thank you
