problem setting up

I tried your product on the advice of a friend and loved it. Went to the Apple App store and bought it because I wanted to share with my family via iCloud. I'm not very computer literate. Does my family also need to purchase a copy of 1password! Also, I didn't want to loose the items in my trial 1password so I did not delete it from my computer before purchasing it from Apple. Now I get a problem warning saying I have two versions. How can I clear this? I've gone into my app folder and deleted the 1password without the license logo from Apple but I still have 1password in my downloads file. Love your product, Wayne

  • Hi @Saltair,

Went to the Apple App store and bought it because I wanted to share with my family via iCloud.

Do you want to sync your 1Password data with your family via iCloud or do you mean you want to share the purchase with your family, so they can set up their own 1Password data?

Does my family also need to purchase a copy of 1password!

No, you can share your purchase with up to 6 family members in the same household but this is a bit difficult to set up at the Apple's app stores.

If you and your family are sharing the AppleID accounts as part of the Apple's Family Sharing model, you can share the app purchases among your family. They should automatically find your 1Password purchase in the Purchases tab of the Mac App Store app.

If not, you can sign into your AppleID account at their Mac App Store apps, download 1Password from the Purchases tab, and then sign out. That should work.

Do you have 1Password for iOS or plan to get 1Password for iOS devices?

Also, I didn't want to loose the items in my trial 1password so I did not delete it from my computer before purchasing it from Apple.

You shouldn't, the Mac App Store version should've pick up the data from the trial version. Can you go to your Applications folder, open the 1Password.app file, unlock, and confirm that your data is there.

If yes, then move the 1Password 5.app file from your Download folder to your Trash. Make sure not to allow any app-cleaning tools to clean up after 1Password if you have such a tool. Check your Trash to make sure only the .app files are there, no other 1Password files. If yes, empty the trash, reboot your Mac, and you should be all set to go.

Hello and thanks for your help. I'd like make it possible for my family to use 1password so we each have access to each others passwords. We share things like bank and email accts.
I tried downloading 1password on to my wife's computer after signing in to the app store on her computer but could not download the file.
I've moved 1password from my download folder into the trash. There remains 1password5 with the Mac license in my app folder.
I'm not familiar with iCloud but was hoping I could share things like 1password with my family by using it.
I do not have ios at this point.
    Thanks again!

  • Hi @Saltair,

I'd like make it possible for my family to use 1password so we each have access to each others passwords. We share things like bank and email accts.

So, you want to share everything, no private data at all?

I tried downloading 1password on to my wife's computer after signing in to the app store on her computer but could not download the file.

Which file do you mean? Did 1Password download but did not pick up your data file?

I'm not familiar with iCloud but was hoping I could share things like 1password with my family by using it.

iCloud does not allow you to share files with your family. If you want to share your 1Password data, you'll need to either use Dropbox or Folder Sync for your own sync solution. Do you guys have your own preferred sync tool?

Wow, I'm really confused. I'd like to share 1password with my wife so we can access common sites using the same password. 2) I still have not been able to download 1password onto my wife's computer. 3) I was hoping iCloud would let me share 1password with my family but will download Dropbox.
    Thank you for your patience.

It sounds like I should have bought 1password from agilebits, instead of apple in order to continue receiving updates, is that correct? If so, can I switch? It looks like dropbox will do everything I was hoping to get from iCloud.

    Hi @Saltair,

    So a little terminology first.

Agile Web Store (AWS) is us and Apple's Mac App Store (MAS) is Apple.

We will support both the MAS and AWS version equally. Sometimes a minor update may be released to just one if the fixes only apply to the version from that store but other than that if a user is entitled to a free update having purchased from us they will get it from MAS too.

The one area where this won't be quite true is when AgileBits decides to charge for a future major version update e.g. when 1Password 6 is released. Don't read too much into that, 6 is merely the number above 5 so I'm not saying we will definitely be charging or implying anything about a possible release date. Say we do charge for 1Password 6 though. There is the possibility existing AWS users will be eligible for a discount which we can do in our store. Sadly such a facility simply does not exist in MAS so unless we offer a discount to anybody then you'd have to pay full price to pick up the newer MAS version. I would be surprised if we weren't willing to offer you the same discount here on proof of purchase of the MAS version though so I wouldn't worry too much at the moment. If you still want though you can download the AWS version and it will recognise your MAS receipt without you needing to do anything.

Now to syncing and your wife's machine.

To download the 1Password (MAS) application on your wife's Mac you would need to do one of two things.

    1. Sign into the App Store as you. You would then find 1Password in your Purchases tab. You could download it but if you sign out and your wife signs back in she won't be eligible for any updates as she didn't purchase it. If you were to sign in again you could download the update. This can get a little annoying potentially and I believe, but have no personal experience, that if you log in and out of a machine too often between two IDs that Apple can lock things up a bit. This is just something I've heard and not witnessed.
    2. If you were to investigate Apple's Family Sharing you could have it where for almost all types of purchases what one purchases the other can download. That link should hopefully be informative, it's Apple's own guide on this matter. That way your wife could download not just 1Password but any update you're eligible for and all while logged in with her Apple ID.

These both assume your wife and yourself have separate Apple IDs. If you share an Apple ID then it should be as simple as clicking the download button opposite 1Password in the Purchases tab of the App Store on your wife's Mac. There is at least one caveat and that's if your wife's machine is running a much older version of OS X. If that's possibly the case please let us know what version of OS X she is running and we can try and find a solution.

In regards to syncing. iCloud allows you to sync data between as many devices that are logged in with the same Apple ID. Where that breaks down is that people tend to have their own Apple IDs so it isn't any good for sharing.

With Dropbox everybody can have their own Dropbox account and then you can share folders between the accounts. If you just want to share a single primary vault with your wife then one Dropbox account between is possibly easier. Both Dropbox and 1Password are relatively flexible at that point though so you can share different vaults with different people and end up with anything from simple to complex setups depending on your needs.

What I sometimes find helps if you can describe what you would like to share and with whom. Then we suggest what we think will work best. You said family in one of your first posts but then have specified your wife. Now if family refers to multiple people you might want a slightly different setup which if we went with now could make it easier more long term.

So that's a fairly long post there. I'll give you a chance to digest that. Let us know what you're thinking and if you have any follow up questions or anything I've missed that you've already asked.

Thank you! I think I would like to switch to (AWS) version. Also, my wife and I want to share passwords to things like email and bank accounts. Our son needs access to some of these things also. I've tried down-loading 1password (MAS) from the family share but have been unable, her computer is not running the latest version of Yosemite and needs to get updated, which we will do promptly. After looking at dropbox I really don't want to use iCloud to share valuables like 1password (your thoughts please). When you talk about sharing folders, what does that mean? Is 1password considered a folder?
    Thank you sincerely!!!

    Hi @Saltair,

So you have two options for switching to AWS.

    1. If you purchased 1Password (MAS) just a couple of days ago you could ask Apple for a refund and then simply re-purchase it direct from our site.
    2. The other option is you can email us at support+licenses@agilebits.com, stating your request, a link to this thread along and attach your MAS receipt.

There's technically a third but if you're having troubles with the MAS version we'll eliminate that last one as it only works if you can download the MAS version.

Okay, so while you do that we can discuss vault configurations. Your son will definitely be able a secondary vault attached to yours, that one is nice and easy. All that is left to decide is the vault with your wife.

    1. Would you like a single vault containing all of your items and all of hers? so you share a single primary vault
    2. Would you prefer you each have your own personal, primary vault and then you share one for just the common items?
    3. or would you like a personal vault for you as potentially the main 1Password user and then you add your wife's primary vault as a secondary? So you have access to all of her items like the shared vault with your son?

In regards to Dropbox. Dropbox is like a pen drive. It's a small filesystem where you can add folders and files and you can treat it much like you would a hard drive or pen drive. You can copy files and folders to it but it has a very neat feature where you can tell Dropbox to share a particular folder that you've stored in Dropbox with certain other Dropbox users (you specify whom, it's under your control). So you can say, share folder X with the Dropbox accounts for my wife and my son and whatever you put in that folder they can see. If you edit it they get the changes straight away and if they add or edit you see it pretty much instantaneously too. You set it up once and then you don't need to bother again. It's a powerful tool and when set up appropriately it means you can share a vault with other people through Dropbox but without having to give away access to your entire Dropbox space or account.

So what you would do is you would instruct 1Password to sync to Dropbox, share the folder with your wife and son and they simply get access to the .agilekeychain. They then add it to their copy of 1Password and from that point onwards additions and modifications made by one are shared with the others.

When it comes to iCloud and Dropbox they have their strengths and weaknesses. iCloud is purely about Apple and it's mostly about very specific goals e.g. sharing an address book or a calendar. I use one feature and that's the Find my iPhone/iPad/Mac. The fact that it can track a device, you can lock or remotely wipe and somebody stealing an iPhone can't even use the likes of recovery mode if the person is still logged into iCloud. That's great but other than that the fact that Dropbox is simply file system means it's useful for lots of stuff. It's also pretty mature and robust. Many of our users have strong preferences but I feel safe recommending either as long as it fits with them. I don't think you can go terribly wrong with Dropbox though given it's ability to handle any scenario 1Password can throw at it.

I purchased 1 password from the apple app store Feb 14. So, that my be considered more than a couple of days ago and I don't know how or where to ask for a refund or receipt other than producing one that was emailed me from paypal. If I cancel with MAS will I loose the information that is in 1 password? As far as the vault configuration, I need to discuss this with my wife but option three makes the most sense, as I understand it.

How do I copy a link to this thread? Boy, I'm not very good at all this.....

  • Hi @Saltair,

You mentioned a receipt emailed to you from paypal? It shouldn't be possible to purchase anything from the Mac App Store via PayPal. Is it possible that what you bought was actually from our website? As for how to copy the link to this thread, simply select and copy the following:

Regardless of refunds or whatnot, your data is safe. We prioritize your data over everything else. We'll make sure you get setup exactly as you'd like.

Thanks, both of you. Rick as for paypal, it was billed for the purchase price and my license is from apple. Under license it says "Thank you for supporting 1Password1 Purchased on the Mac App Store". Also how did you get the link to this thread?

I've sent an email off to agilebits support. Apple isn't helping me. Now I need to contact Dropbox. When I click on the icon in my tool bar I get a bunch of documents that are named by a combination of ineligible numbers and letters. Thanks for all your help!!!
