Start Over Still Asks for Master Password

Hello,

I'm trying to setup 1Password 5 for my dad, but am running into some problems. There was a previous install of 1Password 4, I believe just using the 30 day trial, from about a year ago, but he didn't use it much back then and has since forgotten the master password.

I followed the Uninstalling 1Password for Mac as well as the Starting Over guides, (previous install and new both came from Agile Bits, not MAS), but every time I start 1Password 5 it asks me to input the master password, using the same password hint as the old install.

I tried both guides at least 3 times each, still no luck. I have completely removed all the add-ons and extensions from all browsers, removed the plist files as indicated, even throwing the app in the trash and letting Hazel clear up the left overs, still keeps asking for the password. There is no 1Password data in Dropbox or in iCloud.

I'm at a loss for what to try now beyond loading a new user account on the mac and transferring to that one.

Thanks!

    Hi @bhefty,

I'm sorry you're having such troubles trying to start over again. I do fully understand your frustration when 1Password tries to be helpful but ends up causing more work.

If you are positive that there is no sync data in either Dropbox or iCloud then I would recommend following our Starting Over guide just once more. Make sure there is nothing in either the AWS or MAS locations but then also check to see if the following folder exists:

    ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/

If that folder exists it would suggest the existence of data from a copy of 1Password 3 and yes, 1Password will import that data believing it is being helpful.

If you are still greeted with a request of the Master Password can I ask, does the window look anything like this?

Now you'll notice I've underlined part of the text. This doesn't appear unless 1Password finds more than one vault but when it does it should have that text and it will respond to being clicked. When you do you should see a small menu similar to the next screenshot.

If you get this far then you will be able to create a new vault and tell 1Password to ignore whatever other vault it has found. It will also potentially inform you as to where this vault is hiding purely for reasons of enlightenment at this point. Please do keep us informed but hopefully you'll be reporting success

Thank you very much for the quick reply, that's one of the MANY reasons I love this company!

I followed the guide again, but still ran into the same problem. However, when I was in the "~/Library/Containers" folder to check for the "2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper" folder, I also noticed another file called "com.agilebits.onepassword4.plist". I removed this one as well and rebooted. This solved the issue.

    Thanks again!

  • Hi @bhefty,

That's great, I'm glad you got it resolved. Thanks for telling us about the solution you found.

That is strange, that file should not be in that folder in the first place. We'll investigate to see why it would be there. Thanks again!
