Selectively sharing vaults
Hello,
I have a problem that I feel would be pretty common, but I cannot figure out. I have been using 1password for some time (Mac and iOS) and am trying to bring my wife into the world of password managers. I have partitioned my passwords into two vaults: one for my own personal logins and one for logins that are shared between the two of us. I would like to only share the shared vault with her, but this does not seem an easy/possible thing to do.
I currently have vaults synced between my computer and phone via wifi; I would strongly prefer not to sync the vault via iCloud or Dropbox. However, the app does not seem to want to allow computer-to-computer wifi sync for whatever reason. In desperation I enabled dropbox sync on my computer, but that would seemingly require me to configure dropbox on her machine to use my account (rather than hers). I guess what I am looking for is the following.
- I have a personal vault on my computer that is synced with my phone but not her computer or phone
- She has a personal vault on her computer that is synced with her phone but not my computer or phone
- There is a shared vault that is synced across all computers/phones
- I do not have to set up my dropbox account on her machine or vice versa
- I would preferably be able to sync only via wifi like I was previously
I feel like this should be a pretty common use case; I can't imagine there isn't a way to do this. Any and all help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Dropbox allows you to share a vault with another user. You and your wife can have separate Dropbox account and you would simply share the vault the two of you will share with her.
I realize this answer does nothing to address your preference to avoid using Dropbox. It is true that WiFi sync does not work between Macs. I am not an AgileBits employee, so I don't have any information about the possibility of that happening in the future.

Hi hawkmoth,
I was able to get it worked with the vault synced to a dropbox shared folder. However, it is unfortunate that there is no means to do this with their wifi sync feature. Thanks for the response!

I should add that you are not the only one to express that preference, and I've been hanging around here long enough to know that the developers have taken note.

Hi @knmorgan,
Depending on how often your vault changes you do have an alternative to Dropbox. While yes, Wi-Fi Sync cannot handle the situation you're after, as you already know Wi-Fi Sync can be used in conjunction with another sync method. Instead of Dropbox though what about using Folder Sync? Folder Sync can be used over a network but it was originally intended for use with a pen drive and 1Password would work pretty well in that case. Any small pen drive would do and you would just move it between the computers as required. As I say, it works best if you don't need to update too often so it depends on the scenario.
Let us know if that's something you're interested in. This is our page on Folder Sync and to use a pen drive you would simply point 1Password to it when you're setting it up. If you have any questions do please ask.
