Cross-platform use

We have 2 iMacs, 2 iPads, and 2 Kindle Fires, and am considering purchasing 1Password.

Can I share the same vault across all these devices, and if so, are separate purchases needed for each type of device?

Also - When traveling and using devices like hotel computers, can I somehow invoke 1Password temporarily on those devices?

Thanks!

I don't know about Kindle Fire, but suspect that cannot be used (the available versions are Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android).

You would need to buy one license for the Macs (either from Agile's web store, or from the Mac App Store - the latter allows iCloud syncing but the former does not). For the iPad, the basic version is free, with an in-app purchase providing additional features.

You would share the same vault by syncing via Dropbox or iCloud (syncing is also possible without using a cloud-based solution).

For such things as hotel computers, 1Password Anywhere, which is part of 1PW's Dropbox vault, would give access.

Note that this requires more than one password, despite the 1PW name, as you would need to know your Dropbox password as well as your 1PW master password.

And there are basic issues with security on hotel machines, you might want to subscribe to aVPN service (which would also need its password), and even then there is a risk of the hotel computer being compromised. Probably best for hotels is to use an iPad with a VPN, rather than a hotel machine.

    Hi @Csaba,

It looks like @danco has you pretty covered with a solid answer there. All I can really add is that 1PasswordAnywhere in theory could be used on your Kindle Fire devices to at least view the vault in a read-only fashion. Our 1Password for Android is only in the Google Play store which I believe the Kindle Fire doesn't support because it's a forked OS. 1PasswordAnywhere does mean using Dropbox though with our .agilekeychain format.

I would stand by danco's comments regarding the use of public machines. In terms of security and peace of mind you'd be much better where possible, only accessing your vault from your known devices that you trust. Obviously there are times you simply need to do so e.g. print a ticket using the hotel's printer.

Now if you know roughly in advance what sites this might pertain to and the list is small you could keep those in a secondary vault. That way you could access only that secondary vault from a public machine. It's not ideal but it would help limit potential damage should the worst happen and remove the possibility of very important sites being at risk. The use of a secondary vault on your iOS devices though would require the in-app purchase just to give you fair warning.

If you have any further questions do please ask.
