Don't know if you'll be checking back, given your sign off, but if you do, did you see this: Adding a license to 1Password? It only applies if your copy came directly from AgileBits. If yours came from the Mac App Store, there isn't a license file. Software sold by Apple is tied to the Apple ID used to obtain it.

Hi @brittb,
I'm sorry this has been frustrating for you! I do hope you'll see these replies so we can help you with this, as it could be a simple misunderstanding, and we'd love to help clear it up.
Now if I had to guess, I'd say there's a good chance you started seeing a Trial Expired message in 1Password 5 on your Mac. If so, have you taken a look at this post from the top of our Mac forums? If you haven't already seen that, please check it out, as it might answer your questions.
I searched our system for the email address associated with your forum account, and found a license for 1Password 2 for Mac that you bought in 2008 (I resent that license info to the same email address). If 1Password is asking you to add a license file, that means you have 1Password 4 or 5 installed, but it doesn't look like you purchased a license for version 4 or 5 - unless you used a different email address to make that purchase on our web store? If so, you can have your license resent to that email address by using the "I've lost my license" section of this site.
Or is there a chance you purchased 1Password 4/5 from the Mac App Store? If so, it sounds like you accidentally installed the web store version. If you bought the Mac App Store version of 1Password, you simply need to reinstall it from the Mac App Store (just make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used to purchase it from MAS).
On the other hand, if you haven't purchased an upgrade to 1Password 4/5 and would like to do so, you can enter your license code for 1Password 2 on the this site to see your upgrade discount and license options.
I hope this helps, but if you still have questions about any of that, just let us know. Thanks!

Thanks. It was the App store version. There must be a better way to juggle all those conditional requirements between your version and the MAS.

Glad you got it figured out!
I can't comment on how a business might manage licensing when Apple allows so little control by developers and provides no information about who buys from them. The only way I can think of to make it simpler would be to sell the software only one place. I don't think I'd favor that either. And since I'm just a customer, I haven't any control anyway.

Hi @brittb,
There can always be a better way to do something, otherwise our developers would probably all be on some exotic holiday knowing their job was done  Our hands are quite tied with Apple's stores though. We're not told who has purchased, we have no control over refunds there and they also have no way to offer a targeted discount e.g. existing customers wishing to upgrade or somebody wishing to change from the AWS to MAS version. I assume we're informed X purchases made in month Y and that's it. These are limitations which we simply have to accept. It makes licensing queries harder as it isn't simply the case of querying an email address in our system, we have to go through the steps on how to check the App purchase history, make sure the customer isn't confusing Mac and iOS and that they haven't accidentally hidden the purchase and do this in tandem with our system while we try to determine where it was purchased.
This is what any company who sells both through Apple and another store faces. It isn't ideal by any means.
