iCloud support / other sync services in 1Password 5

Hey folks,

I switched from a competitor to 1Password mainly to ensure that I have control over my data and have it synced easily at the same time. Since you cancelled iCloud from the services 1Password I have a bunch of problem I tried to solve by buying 1Password in the first place: I avoid using dropbox for confidential data (please see latest reports on cloud security to understand why), so I´m stuck with Wifi which leads to sync problems literally every time I use one of the services (because I don´t have a wifi sync / am not using my Mac everytime after I change a credential on one of my iOS devices). I read your FAQ and blogposts about that and would like to say nevertheless: that is not a sufficient situation.

Please consider adding more syncing services (webdav? - or at least some cloud providers with a better security record that dropbox)

Best,
David

    Hi @nebaon,

    Thanks for taking the time to contact us about that! Unfortunately, iCloud sync is not available in the web store version of 1Password 5 for Mac. Due to the way the new iCloud sync works, it's only available in the Mac App Store version. We have more information about that in our Web store and iCloud FAQ.

    If you want to use iCloud sync, you'll need to purchase the Mac App Store version of 1Password 5 (or if you purchased a previous version from the Mac App Store, it's a free upgrade). Alternately (and as you already know), you can switch to Dropbox or Wi-Fi sync:

    You said you don't want to use Dropbox, which is fine, although I do want to mention that we're very confident about storing 1Password data in the cloud, and you can find more information about the security of your 1Password data in the cloud in this article.

    I´m stuck with Wifi which leads to sync problems literally every time I use one of the services (because I don´t have a wifi sync / am not using my Mac everytime after I change a credential on one of my iOS devices).

    Is the problem simply that you aren't using your Mac every time you want to sync changes, or are you having other trouble with Wi-Fi sync? If you're having other issues trying to sync via Wi-Fi, please let us know and we'll be happy to help with that.

    Please consider adding more syncing services (webdav? - or at least some cloud providers with a better security record that dropbox)

    We do receive a lot of requests to add support for other sync services, and our developers have certainly been exploring options. It's a little more complicated than it may seem, but hopefully we'll have more options for you in the future. Thanks for your feedback about that!

    Hi, @nebaon,

    When did you buy 1PW? If no more than 30 days ago, AgileBits will give you a refund and you can buy from the App Store.

    If more than 30 days ago, unfortunately you just have to buy again without any refund or discount.

    Yes, I meant to mention that but forgot. Thanks for the assist, @danco! :)

    I have had the same issue and would like to sync with icloud. i have purchased on 3rd March 2015. How do I go about getting refund from AB so that I can then purchase from App store?

    @nebaon - I can't refrain from noting that AgileBits certainly didn't "cancel" iCloud syncing. A change made by Apple took that option away from applications that Apple does not sell themselves from one of their app stores. This was not a decision by AgileBits to cancel anything.

    @everythink as you bought 1P within the past 30 days send an email to support+licenses @ agilebits.com with the following information:

    1. your full name;
    2. your full address when you purchased 1P;
    3. the approximate date you bought 1P;
    4. the email address you used when you purchased 1P;
    5. a request for a refund to enable you to buy 1P from the Mac App Store;
    6. a link to this thread.

    You will receive an automatic response with a ticket number. Post that number in this thread, which will help AgileBits connect the two and speed the response.

    Edit: I've just noted you posted in a separate thread and I've also replied there, which is rather a waste of time. Please don't do that.

    In the past I synced 1Password with drop box without a problem.
    I’ve been trying to turn on cloudsyncing without success.
    iCloud drive is enabled on my iMac but the option to sync to the cloud doesn’t show in the drop down.
    Following what I thought were the online instructions, I’ve disabled syncing in 1Password in the preferences section of my iPhone and iPad. Still nothing.
    Do you have any advice please?
    Should I just return to using dropbox?

    @ebabeb I think the place to start is reading the AgileBits iCloud FAQ. I suspect you're going to find the answer you need there.

    Thanks for that.
    I've read it a few times but still don't seem to get the answer.
    I'll try again later but at the moment just feel frustrated by something that really shouldn't be a problem for me

    Well, if you are still puzzled please tell us:

    1. what version of 1P you are using on your Mac (go to 1P > About 1Password and tell us exactly what it says there);
    2. what version of 1P for iOS you are using (go to the 1P Settings screen and look towards the bottom for the version number);
    3. your OS X and iOS version numbers.

    Someone will then be able to help you, I think.

    Hi @ebabeb,

    I see from our records that you've purchased 1Password 5 from us in the past. Now as Drew_AG covered in post #2, iCloud Sync support is now limited to the Mac App Store (MAS) version as of 1Password 5 when Apple decided to enforce restricted access to the iCloud related frameworks. As iCloud Sync relies on CloudKit, an iCloud framework, only the MAS version can use it.

    For users of our Agile Web Store (AWS) version iCloud Sync simply won't be shown as an option in the drop down menu for syncing.

    Now if you've also purchased a copy of the MAS version then that's different and it might be you're unknowingly running the AWS version when you mean to be running the MAS one or possibly you're trying to sync a secondary vault while iCloud Sync only supports syncing the primary.

    We'll have a better idea if you can tell us the answers to Stephen_C's questions :smile:

    I understand the issue you have encountered with 2 different versions of 1Password (AWS and MAS). This is kinda amateurish though and a very poor solution for the devoted Mac users like myself that bought the AWS version not knowing this issue could arise.

    You encountered a corner that a software company really shouldn't end up in - having 2 different versions of your software for the same platform.

    It is unacceptable that paying customers would need to buy a new version to get all features available. So I would expect that AgileBits make the MAS version available for free for customers that already purchased the AWS version.

    Best regards,

    Mikkel

    @kolbak - You do realize that this situation is not one that was created by AgileBits. It was a change created by Apple when they updated OS X to Yosemite. You also presumably know that Apple provides no way for a developer to give upgrade pricing to existing users or to convert licenses originally sold elsewhere to a Mac App Store license. AgileBits isn't the only developer with these restrictions. All of them live with it.

    As is see it, the only way they could have handled this and had only one version would have been to withdraw one or the other. Then everyone with a current license they had sold would have been forced to by again at full price from Apple. If they stopped selling on the MAS, no one would have had access to iCloud at any price, and they would have lost an outlet that is very convenient for many users.

    I recently read an article, the point of which is that Apple, if it really wants to support developers as it says it does, must introduce free trial versions and offer a way for developers to give discounted upgrade pricing to existing licensees. That seemed on the mark to me, but Apple currently does neither. If they did both, I'd expect many developers to move entirely to the Apple App Stores for sales.

    Your proposal to grant existing Agileabits licensees a free MAS license would be great, if Apple allowed that. They don't.

    If you haven't seen AgileBits's own discussion of this proble, it's worth doing, even though I don't expect you to change your mind. It can be found near the top of this section of the forum, here.

    (I'm not an AgileBits employee, but I am a contented user with an AgileBits web store license. I probably would use iCloud if it were available, but I have enough confidence in the security of my 1Password data that I won't worry much about which sync solution to use.)

    Hi @kolbak,

    When we discovered that iCloud Sync would become limited to MAS applications we did explore all possibilities on how to handle this. As hawkmoth has stated though, there is no way to mass migrate AWS users to MAS (no such functionality) and no way to even offer a selective discount to AWS users (again, no such functionality). What we could do and did was discount the MAS version for a period of time after Yosemite was released.

    When we first entered Apple's Mac App Store the two versions were for all intents and purposes identical, this is a recent development due to changes in Apple's policies and frameworks. As Dave Teare has stated here in the forums, we'd have never included iCloud support in the AWS version if this situation had been envisaged.

    I realise why customers stuck in this position are unhappy but if we could have transitioned you over to MAS we would have.
