Regarding access to passwords after lost/failed laptop

Hello all, please forgive me if this question has been addressed elsewhere.

New user to 1Password and love it so far. I have 1Password installed on my laptop, I have an iPhone 4 which from what I understand does not support 1Password's iOS app correct?

My main question is, say my laptop is stolen, lost, or fails. What are my options to access my vault's information? I've seen the faq's regarding syncing with Dropbox or iCloud, is this my only option?

Any input on this situation would be very helpful, thank you.

It is a good idea to back up your files to an external drive regularly (not just 1PW passwords, but documents, images, etc). There are several ways of doing that, the simplest and cheapest being Time Machine (which comes with the Mac0 and a physically connected external drive. But there are other methods, such as CrashPlan (either to a friend or to their site) which stores offsite.

    Hi @deeno,

Thanks for choosing 1Password to keep your digital data secure and organized! I hope that Danco's advice has been helpful for you.

1Password 5 for iOS does require iOS 8. So if the iOS device you're using is unable to install iOS 8, you won't be able download 1Password 5 for iOS.

It's great to hear that you are thinking seriously about the security and permanence of your data. As @danco says, if you are concerned about accessing your data if anything should happen to your laptop, then you want to look into external back-up options.

As far as storing your 1Password data in a cloud-based service like Dropbox or iCloud, I just wanted to tell you a bit more about 1Password's encryption. We are very confident about storing 1Password data in the cloud, as your data file is encrypted with an exceedingly secure encryption algorithm called AES. Even if someone were to acquire a copy of your 1Password data file, it would be extremely difficult (approaching impossible in a human lifetime) for them to actually gain access to your passwords without your Master Password. In short, we believe it is just as secure as having the data on your laptop. To learn more about cloud data security, have a read through our Knowledgebase article on Cloud Security.

And you can see the thoughts behind our data format's design here.

Also, you can check out our blog for many more articles that go into the nitty gritty math behind what makes 1Password so secure.

I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns!
