Which version for 10.6.8?

I have two 10.6.8 Macs currently running 1Password 3.8.21, and two iOS 8 devices that were running 1Password 4, an iPhone and an iPad. I keep the 1Password data on the Macs in synch using Unison. I have been doing manual one-way updates of the 1Password data from one Mac to the iOS devices using iTunes file sharing. However, 1Password 4 stopped running on my 1Pad (it would crash when I tried to run it). I tried deleting and re-installing it, but it always crashed. I let the Apple Store update it to 1Password 5, and that runs. I was able to get the 1Password data file synched from the iPhone to the iPad using 1Cloud synching, but in the process I accidentally updated 1Password on the 1Phone, so now both are version 5. I am afraid I won't be able to update the 1Password data from my Macs any more.

Should I downgrade 1Password on the iOS devices back to version 4? Is this possible? Can I upgrade on my 10.6.8 Macs? How can I update 1Password data from a 10.6.8 Mac to an iOS 8 device?

@jetboy: iCloud Sync requires 1Password 5 from the iOS or Mac App Store (which, in turn, requires iOS 8 or Yosemite), so that won't be an option for you unless you upgrade that particular computer, it sounds like.

BUT you can actually sync your 1Password data between all of the above using Dropbox. If your iPhone or iPad have your current 1Password data, you will first need to tell 1Password to store your data in Dropbox, and then you can set up Dropbox Sync on your Mac as well.

I would advise against downgrading OS or app versions, as the old ones will not have the benefit of security and bug fixes going forward. Fortunately, you can use Dropbox to keep your data in sync, even with the older Mac. I hope this helps! :)

Thanks @brenty I was able to use Dropbox synching. I'd rather use iTunes file sharing (even though it is one-way update rather than 2-way sync) just because I prefer not to store my data in the cloud. Is iTunes file sharing still possible with 1Password for iOS 5?

@jetboy: Yes. 1Password 5 for iOS supports iTunes File Sharing to save a backup of your 1Password data.

In case it helps, 1Password Dropbox Sync does not rely on cloud security at all, since your 1Password data is encrypted before it ever leaves your device; so even in the case of a compromise (i.e. your 1Password vault being stolen from a compromised online account, or from your own home), your 1Password data is encrypted using your Master Password, so it would be needed in order to access your data, even if your data falls into the wrong hands. Of course, be sure to use a long, strong Master Password to make sure it is next-to-impossible for someone to guess it!
