Multiple entries for same entity

I'm a newby to 1Password, having switched over from eWallet. I looked for an answer to this question, but maybe I'm just not searching properly because I couldn't find an answer. Is it normal to have multiple entries in 1Password for the same entity? For example, I do my banking online so I regularly login to my bank's online portal. I created a Login entry for that. But I also want to store my Credit Card information as well as information for each bank account. When all is said and done, I have 5-7 entries all for a single bank. I've done it this way because I don't see a way to add all the necessary information to the Login entry or username/password information to the Bank Account entry - and I'm not even sure I should.

Am I just not understanding the new way of doing things in 1Password or am I doing things wrong? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi @dk5jmiller,

That's actually a very good question! The short answer is that, from your description, it sounds like you're doing it correctly.

To give you some additional information, there are three 'special' item categories in 1Password: Logins, Identities and Credit Cards. Those types of items are used for filling specific types of forms on websites. Other categories (such as the Bank Accounts category) are meant mostly for personal organization - they help you securely store and keep track of other information that you wouldn't normally need to fill on a website. So, the way Categories are set up in 1Password, you might have multiple items in 1Password for the same 'thing'. Bank accounts are a great example:

    • A Login item can store the username and password you use to log into your bank's website.
    • A Credit Card item can store the details of your debit or credit card so you can fill them in when shopping online.
    • A Bank Account item can store details about an account you open with your bank, like an account number, routing number, branch address, etc.

Although those things might all be associated with the same bank, they are different kinds of account information used for different purposes, so they each have their own categories in 1Password. If you'd like to group those different items together in 1Password, you can use Folders or Tags.

For more information about the item categories in 1Password, take a look at this User Guide article: Categories

I hope that helps, but please let us know if you have more questions about that! :)

    Hi @dk5jmiller,

I'm glad to hear @Drew_AG was able to help explain how 1Password works.

Certainly we've had requests to merge certain information together and it is a request that we will consider. I don't think there is much information overlap between the current types and I can't remember a time where I needed more than one item to complete a task (meaning they seem to be quite independent from my experiences).

Of course any thoughts you have on the matter are always of interest.

In fact, creating multiple entries from a single entry is what the convert_to_1p4 utility does - I call it "exploding" an item. In some cases, the titles are slightly modified to be more obvious.

@dk5jmiller - if you want better categorization of your eWallet entries into 1Password, maybe give the converter a try...

@MrC: That's an excellent suggestion. While we are not experts in other software's data formats, some users have been kind enough to help us develop some basic 'conversion' logic to help folks migrate their data.

Of course, it would be easier if everyone supported a more standard format such as CSV for import/export, but we can only do our part in that regard to make things easier for our customers.

@dk5jmiller: Generally, the 'multiple entries' stems from item types that contain different fields or formatting than 1Password supports. When in doubt, we prefer to err on the side of caution and keep too much data rather than throwing out something you might want to keep. I hope this helps! :)
