I have 1password3 on my dead mac. What about upgrades?

I bought 1password3 for an old imac running 10.5. It died after a power outage, but it had open heart surgery and the working hard drive was removed. I will soon have a new mac mini running 10.10. What are my upgrade options? Any discounts for being a long time customer? If I buy from the MAS (in the US), am I still subject to foreign exchange fees on my credit card?

I use a free version of Dashlane on my office PC (windows 8.0), but would rather use 1password. Good job you guys, but the whole iCloud is something I need to figure out as it was not in my version of 1password.

Unfortunately, there is no procedure for upgrade discounts from the App Store (Apple's decision). An upgrade discount is available if you buy direct from Agile's web store. Both versions allow for Dropbox sync, and many users (including Agile staffers) are happy with that rather than iCloud sync.

As for foreign exchange fees, I would expect you would be charged, but that is a matter for your credit card company, no-one else can be definite about it. But might it be better to buy from a local Mac App Store rather than the US one, or isn't there one in your country. It is possible to change the App Store country.

I am in the US. The foreign exchange fees are because you guys are in Canada. So the thought was to buy from MAS which is US based and therefore not subject to the fees. But perhaps they still might depending on the MAS arrangements with Agile (which I thought you should know).

I'm not familiar with Dropbox. Is that a for fee service?

So what is the discount if I continue to buy direct from you? The website does not indicate anything from what I scanned.

ok, I signed up already for the fee free service on dropbox which should be enough 1password syncing.

The AgileBits webstore is priced in US dollars, not Canadian. And Dropbox provides free service with a storage allotment that is much larger than almost any imaginable 1Password database.

@ddokoto: Currently we are running a sale (limited time) on 1Password for each platform, across the board. Check out the pricing there (US dollars, in all cases), and then you can check your license key to see the upgrade pricing you are eligible for due to your previous purchase, and -- naturally -- choose the better deal of the two. Enjoy your new Mac. I hope this helps! :)

Yes, the webstore has always been priced in US dollars, but my Visa card ALWAYS subjected me to foreign exchange fees in the past as you are in canada. Not sure how I can preview whether the transaction will be evaluated today.

    Hi @ddokoto,

Unfortunately we have no way of knowing ahead of time if your credit card/bank is going to charge an international transaction fee when making a purchase from our website. In fact, we don't even know about that fee after you make the purchase - it won't show up in our system because we're not adding that fee, and we're not collecting any of it. It would be charged directly to you from your bank. All we can do is include the following note at the bottom of the checkout screen:

Note that AgileBits is a Canadian company and some banks elect to charge US customers a small fee for international transactions, even when performed in US currency. This fee is set by the bank but is normally less than one dollar and is collected directly by the bank and not us.

If you have questions about whether or not you're going to be charged that fee when making a purchase from our site, you'll need to check with the bank from the card you plan to use. I'm sorry we don't have more control over that! For some more information, please see our Currency and Tax FAQ.

Well, this time I used Paypal. I asked 2 Paypal agents about the fee and got 3 answers. So its time to roll the dice again. You'd think there be boilerplate responses to this question by now. I checked every one of my credit cards and all charge about 3% for a foreign transaction fee. So far, there is no transaction fee charged by paypal, but the night is young.

@ddokoto: I hear you! Part of the confusion may be due to national, regional, and even municipal differences in laws limiting what PaylPal can charge, who they can charge it to, and under what circumstances. Generally speaking though, the receiver pays the fee to PayPal, so the sender doesn't have to worry about all that. Cheers! :)
