Vault Management/Synchronization Problem...

I have a very serious vault management / vault synchronization problem.

I use 1Password for OS X, iOS and Windows.

The 3 versions of 1Password were working perfectly yesterday in that they were all using and synching with the vault that was stored in Dropbox....while I don't know how it happened I now have a serious mess on my hands in that:

  1. The OS X version seems to be using the local vault because the Preferences | Sync tab indicates that the vault is not being synced anywhere. In addition, when I try to sync it with Dropbox it says my vaults, presumably my local vault and my dropbox vault, will be merged. I stopped at this point -- i.e. did not merge the vaults -- as this did not seem like a good idea.

  2. The iOS version is the same as the the OS X version.

  3. The Windows version seems to be working properly because the 1 Password Vault setting in Preferences | General is accessing the Dropbox vault.

There does not -- at least none that I can find -- seem to be a setting in either the OS X version or the iOS version that allows me to open / point to the 1Password vault that is located in Dropbox.

Please help me get the vaults back in sync. I am desperate to gets fixed as I am a heavy 1Password user

Thanks in advance,

Joel

As a follow up to the above I have fixed the iOS version by erasing all 1Password iOS data and settings, restarting the iOS version, and then pointing the iOS version to Dropbox....now, how do I do this for the OS X version?

    Hi @Joelc,

I'm sorry you're having trouble with Dropbox sync! I think part of the problem is just confusion about the difference between how the Windows version works, and how the Mac and iOS versions work. 1Password for Windows reads & writes directly to/from the .agilekeychain file in the Dropbox folder. However, 1Password for Mac and iOS each read & write to/from their own local/internal database, and then sync changes between that database and the .agilekeychain file in the Dropbox folder.

So that's basically a fancy way of saying that the Mac and iOS versions always use a local vault, and the problem is simply that the Dropbox sync setting has been disabled. You were on the right track when you tried re-enabling Dropbox sync. The message about merging your vaults may have been a little confusing, but that's exactly what you want to do (if you use multiple vaults, just make sure you've selected the right vault in Dropbox). Merging basically just looks for new data in a vault and adds it to the other. Any items that match in both vaults are left alone, so you shouldn't get any duplicates. Nothing will be deleted unless you specifically delete it yourself.

When you re-enable Dropbox sync in 1Password for iOS, you may get a Vault Mismatch warning, which appears just in case you have multiple vaults in Dropbox, so you don't accidentally merge two completely different vaults together. As long as you've selected the right vault (or if you have only 1 vault), just tap More Info, then tap Merge These Vaults Anyway.

If you have more questions about that, please let us know. We're always glad to help! :)

    @ Drew_AG:

Appreciate your response and in particular note the following:

<<I'm sorry you're having trouble with Dropbox sync! Appreciate you noting the above.

Appreciate this as well but suggest that you modify the message to make it clear that common data will be left untouched as this would have saved me a great deal of effort and grief....that is, to ensure that I would not duplicate my entries, or create other issues by merging the data I removed all data from both my OS X and iOS version so that 1Password started "fresh" and then pointed it to Dropbox where -- as you note -- it created local files.

    <>

Per the above only 1 vault so not an issue but please make the "merging messages" more user friendly.

<<If you have more questions about that, please let us know. We're always glad to help! :)>>

    Thanks!>! >!

You're very welcome, @Joelc! I'm glad I could help to explain that, but sorry it wasn't before you had already removed all your data on Mac and iOS. The "merge" messages are definitely a little cryptic, and I agree they could be made much clearer. We've received similar comments about that from other customers, so hopefully we'll improve that in the future. Thanks for your feedback, we appreciate it!

Drew_AG, that is great and I look forward to the clean up of the "merge" message...
