New Error Message On Desktop

Partial Text of message. "The system launched an incorrect version of 1 Password mini. This is followed by referencing a series of Application files. Then the final message says; Please make sure you have only one copy of 1 Password on your Mac."

This error message just started appearing in the last few days. If you hit OK then 1 Password opens up with no problem. I have the latest version
5.1
Any suggestions on why this occurred or how to stop it from opening on desktop would be appreciated.

@SKY833 - I am going to move this thread to the Mac section of the forum, since your issue is with that version, not the iOS version. You'll get more help there.

But, you are describing what can sometimes happen when there are more than one copy of 1Password under Yosemite. It's an OS X issue, but in a nutshell, Yosemite is sending 1Password on a wider search than it should for mini, and it's locating one that is older than your installed version. This problem apples even to attached external drives where you may have backups stored. That extra copy might also be in your Downloads folder.

The error message you describe should include a path to the older version. If you follow that path to the older copy of 1Password and delete it, you should stop seeing this error message.

And odd as it seems, if you are using a backup solution like Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner, you should delete the copies in those backups and then exclude 1Password from future backups. I know this sounds odd, but you can easily download a fresh copy of the application in the even you should ever need to restore your system from a backup. Your data will continue to be backed up, even though the main application isn't.

The AgileBits folks have tried to figure a way around this issue, but it's an Apple issue that they can't control. There hasn't been a good workaround either, because they can't specify where the 1Password main application should look for mini.

Thanks for the info. I will follow the application detail and delete. And yes I do have an external backup drive that I copy to each week using SuperDuper.
I will take it off line and see it the error message disappears. I have had Yosemite on this machine since it was introduced but this issue just started.

@SKY835 - I had the same experience of having Yosemite installed for quite awhile before I encountered the problem too.

If you wish @SKY835, I can go into lots of detail regarding this. Sadly it isn't something we can resolve ourselves, it will require changes by Apple to properly resolve this. Until then we're hoping to improve the reporting back we do to the user when this happens.

Problem solved after new backup to external drive mirrored my hard drive on the iMac. I did clean out a lot of references to 1 Password 4 from my application files before this backup. I also use my external for Time Machine backups. I am now trying to resolve a sync problem to my Macbook Pro using Dropbox. I think I read on someone else's query how to handle this. I understand that I cannot use iCloud without buying a new 1 Password 5 through the App Store. I hope Apple resolves this conflict. Dropbox works fine but it can be a little tricky with the sync setup for 1 Password. I have it working fine on iPhones, iPads and iPod but the Macbook Pro is fighting me. Thanks again for your assistance.

    Hi @SKY835,

I'm happy to hear the problem opening 1Password is solved now!

As for iCloud sync, you're correct that it's only available in the Mac App Store version of 1Password 5 for Mac. That's because it uses Apple's new CloudKit technology, which can only be used by apps sold through the Mac App Store. We'd absolutely love to be able to include that in the web store version of 1Password as well, but unfortunately that's not currently possible. We have more information about that in these knowledgebase articles:

Are you having trouble with Dropbox sync? If so, we should probably start a new thread for that. Please make sure to let us know some details about the problem so we know what's happening on your end. Thanks!
