1Password storing multiple logins after changes of password & often no prompt to save new password

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. 1Password just keeps adding new entries when I change a password so that in some cases I have as many as 10 or 12 entries for the same site. It is really tedious deleting these manually - I have to go through and look at each one and figure out the last date & delete the others. Shouldn't the application be replacing entries when there is already an entry recorded rather than just adding a new one? Somewhat ironically, on many occasions it seems not to give me a prompt to save a new password. Additionally, it often quits abruptly and then when I go to reopen it wants my password for 1password again. Any clues anyone? I'm sure it will be something stupid that I'm doing because I get everything wrong but whatever it is, I can't figure it out.

Please do tell us what version of 1P you are using (go to 1P > About 1Password and tell us exactly what it says there) and your OS X version. Please also let us know what you have checked under 1P > Preferences > Security Auto-lock.

When you change a saved password (assuming you're using 1P4 or 1P5) do you follow the procedure in this knowledge base article?

Finally, if you do a Spotlight search on your Mac for "1Password" (without the quotation marks) what result does it give?

My apologies, I meant to do that but got side-tracked by my dog. I have 1P version 5 - 5.1 510035 I'm using OSX Yosemite 10.10.2 on a MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011, 16gb RAM / 250gb SSD I have nothing checked under auto-lock. I will check theknowledge-base article and get back to you but basically I have simply responded to the prompts that 1P gives when you enter a different login to a site than what it has - the request as to whether you want to save it - I answer yes.
A Spotlight search produces the 1Password 5 logo at the top of a list of file locations and on the right a box indicating 1Password 5 Version 5.1 Kind: Application Size 47mb Created 27.1.2015 Modified 27.1.2015 Last opened 3/4/2015

    Hi @mikisdad,

As a precaution, the decision was made to be very cautious when it came to updating existing Logins. The reason is it was deemed easier to clean up multiple Login items than it would be to unpick an update. I may need it explained to myself at least once more as I'm not sure I agree but I can't say a word against the time the team puts into considering these actions and the impact on the users data. We're always very careful regarding your vault as we understand how important the data is.

As a result, we default the 1Password Save Login window to Save new Login rather than Update existing Login, this option being visible if you click where I've circled in the screenshot below

Click there will bring up the following

and from there you will now find what used to be a text box for entering a new Login items title has turned into a drop down menu with a list of applicable Login items as below

A bit more on this can be found in our How to change a password for a site saved in 1Password but if that doesn't help please do let us know

I think this is what I need - I really appreciate all your help and for you not treating me as a complete dickhead. I'll see if I can fix up my multiples and then adopt this process with some test logins but I'm fairly sure that what you've explained should fix my problem - one that it seems I've made for myself. Thank you again for your courtesy and patience.

    Hi @mikisdad,

1Password is a reasonably complex piece of software and while we do try to keep it as simple and intuitive as possible as we add more features it gets harder and harder. Sometimes we make mistakes or we forget what it's like for different level of users. My job is to help you as the user and to then pass your thoughts on as we refine the program.

If I can help you find a workflow that works for you right now while we improve 1Password then I feel like I've done my job properly
