Master password - Any way to get in? HELP
My dear friend recently died, and he took his master password with him. Now we are trying to handle his bills and such and are struggling with trying to get into his stuff. I recognize the security hole this creates, and have read on here that there is no way into the vault. If anyone has any thoughts that could help me I would be very appreciative. @edmoyerjr I've deleted your email address because this is a public forum and publishing it here is an irresistible temptation to spammers.
I'm afraid there is no way to access data stored in 1Password without knowing the master password. You can try any number of times without being locked out finally but ultimately you have to know the master password.
It may be that you'll discover a few passwords if you can access your friend's keychain on his Mac (using the Keychain Access utility) or from his browser (for example if he used Firefox). You might also investigate to see if there's any chance he left a note of his master password in a bank safe or somewhere like that.
I'm really sorry not to be of more help at this difficult time for you.

HI @edmoyerjr,
Stephen_C is unfortunately quite correct regarding this matter. We purposely have no way to reset a Master Password and the existence of any back door would destroy the security of the product. The only way to access the vault is through the entry of the correct Master Password. On the Mac there is the password hint that should display itself after three attempts but if your friend was careful enough it won't mean anything to you. I know some of our users keep a record of their Master Password in their will, is it possible they have done this at all?
Our condolences go out to you and your friend's family for their and your loss.
