Help! I think I deleted the vault DB... [Resolved]

So this morning in a wild deletion spree, I deleted some stuff that I thought was related to 1Password 4. Instead the next time I opened 1Password, it looks like 1Password didn't know where my keychain was stored so it auto-detected my Dropbox keychain.

All was good until I tried to switch to another vault and realized that it no longer shows up anywhere. There appears to be some Time Machine copies of the contents of ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Data, so should I just restore that?

On a related note, why does 1Password 5 still appear to use a directory called "1Password 4"?

    Hi @nvahalik ,

Yikes! Wild deletion sprees can be dangerous ... although, I've been prone to them myself on occasion, so I certainly understand the desire to have the computer all neat and tidy. It does sound like you might have removed your 1Password database though.

Instead the next time I opened 1Password, it looks like 1Password didn't know where my keychain was stored so it auto-detected my Dropbox keychain.

1Password's local data (which includes all the data from your multiple vaults) is stored in the Application Support folder. When you sync a vault, a copy of that particular vault's data is stored in the appropriate sync location (in this case, Dropbox.) But the data also remains in the local Application Support folder. If 1Password opens and cannot connect with the local data, it will open as a new user and search for available synced data.

Now, you're right, 1Password 5 does indeed store its data in the /1Password 4 folder. Why? Well, the short answer is that 1Password 5 was offered as an update to 1Password 1Password 4 instead of as a brand new app, and the decision was made to simply use the existing data folder without moving everything to a new folder. This made things a lot simpler on the development end, although it's easy to see how it might cause some confusion for those of us who like to go poking around in the Application Support folder every now and then.

There appears to be some Time Machine copies of the contents of ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Data, so should I just restore that?

Thank goodness for Time Machine backups! Yes, you do want to restore the 1Password 4 folder to its home in Application Support.

I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns. :)
