Dropbox sync problem

Dropbox on my Mac says it is continually trying to sync the file ".ws.agile.1Password.settings". I've written Dropbox about it with no success; they say to talk to you about it. I can't find that file, or I would delete it and hope that would keep Dropbox from doing that. There doesn't seem to be any such file on Dropbox or on my Mac at all. I guess it's doing no harm, but it doesn't seem right. Can you help?

Thanks.                               --Jim

    Hi Jim ( @jimtparr ),

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with 1Password! Let's get this straightened out.

Please log in to your Dropbox account. You should find that .ws.agile.1Password.settings file at the root of your Dropbox folder. Simply delete it.

1Password for Mac and 1Password for iOS no longer use this file. If you're also using 1Password on a Windows computer or an Android device, 1Password will re-generate this file correctly the next time sync occurs.

I hope this helps, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns!

Thanks for your response. I can't find any such file in my Dropbox folder. I'm attaching a screen shot of the top level contents of the folder. I also checked the files on the Dropbox web site. There are only two files at top level either place: Getting Started.rtf and Shell.png. Mysterious. --Jim

  • Hi @jimtparr,

Because the file begins with a period, it's treated as a hidden file by the Mac. But if you go to the dropbox website, and login there, you should see it listed. Here's what it looks like for me here:

You should then be able right-click on the file, and delete it.

Sorry, as I said, I looked on the Dropbox web site, and no such file appears. WAIT A MINUTE, I clicked on "deleted files," and it showed up. Now I've "permanently deleted" it. Dropbox still says it's trying to sync it. I shut Dropbox down and restarted it, and it still wants to sync the nonexistent file. Darn.

Got it! I thought the hidden file might be in my Dropbox folder, and that there might be a way to make it visible. David Pogue's "The Missing Manual for Yosemite" reveals that you can see hidden files in an open or save dialog by pressing shift-command-period. I launched TextEdit and told it to open a file in my Dropbox folder. During the open dialog I pressed shift-command-period, and there was the file, which I was then able to delete. Now all is as it should be. Thanks for your time and suggestions.

  • Thanks for the update, @jimtparr. I actually wasn't aware of that shortcut to see hidden files. I use really old tricks to see them, that way looks much simpler!

Let us know if you have any more questions.
