Master password length
Hi, have tested demos of several versions of 1-password, but it scared me away every time. Here's why:
1) I install, and enter a long, 20+ character master password, and the app lets me keep typing. All well so far.
2) The long password also "works" when I use it, but now, the system stops accepting typing at 20+ minus X characters.
3) Then, I try to change the master password, BUT now I'd need to know how many of the characters I need to type, as the full, original master password won't work.
=> The system should warn me and not let me type more in 1), regardless if it's a demo limitation or not. There are others than me who have money, but little time to read (really), and they might get confused by the (likely demo) limitation the system doesn't warn about.
PS Yes, I searched the forum some about master passwords, but found only advanced discussions. Also feel free to call me stupid, I don't mind ;-)

Dang. The oversized bold font was not deliberate. No clue how it happened.

Bold fixed (it was the leading # character in front of the numbered list).

Hi @amstaff,
The trial version of 1Password is completely free of limitations during the first 30 days and at no point do we ever place any limitation on the Master Password. To do so would put our potential customer's data at risk and that's not how to win anybody's heart.
With your Master Password we use a Secure Event Input field. It's a special OS X input type designed to stop key loggers etc. from listening in. It's the same field as used by OS X for entering your user account password when you log into your machine.
Now it's true, after a certain number of characters it does seem like it isn't registering any more but it's just a visual artefact. My own Master Password is in the ballpark of 30 characters and I've never had any issues as long as we ignore my sometimes atrocious typing.
I even went as far as messing about with a 56 character password which behaved both for unlocking and in the window for changing a Master Password (accepting as a new one as well as the current when changing it to something a smidgen smaller).
You probably have some follow up questions so do please ask away

I suspect the change in numbering is something to do with the forum software, not a deliberate change by MrC, though it seems he missed the change.
I s am fairly sure that there are times when I have labelled my answer with 1 and 2, only to have them show up as 1 and 1.

It is the forum, your post does still have it recorded as 2. & 3. but the Markdown interpreter has some 'quirks'. You can avoid a Markdown numbered list by not using 2. and instead 2) or any other variation. If you want I can make this minor edit to your post so the intended numbering shows.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, did the posts relating to your query help at all @amstaff?

I am having a similar problem. I changed my Master Password and it accepted it. It is 20 characters long. Now when I try to enter it into the Vault, it only lets me type 19 characters and it says my master password is not accepted. Can you please advise. I just finished logging in all of my details and would really hope I don't have to re-enter them again. Thanks in advance for your speedy attention as I need to share with my daughter ASAP.

There is no reasonable restriction on the length of your master password and many of us have master passwords longer than 20 characters. I think you might be seeing a cosmetic issue where 1P appears not to accept the additional character but in fact will do so. Try typing the master password in plain text in something like Notes then copying and pasting it in 1P to see if it works.

Hi @Marlene0326r,
We're aware of a possible cross-platform issue with very specific characters but on a single platform e.g. we haven't touched the code for a while. Did Stephen_C's post help?
