1password - wrong data

I have an imac and a macbook. i recently replaced the macbook with a new machine. i was already running and syncing 1password on the imac and old macbook.. On the new macbook i downloaded 1password 5. when i run it, it tells me it has found my existing data in icloud. but it won't accept my master password and offers me a hint which is certainly not mine. Whatever it thinks it's found, it's nothing to do with me. But i can'e get past this, I can't get into 1password, it just keeps asking for and then refusing my master password!

    Hi @trevojrohnwright,

We'd like to learn a little more about your current setup if you don't mind.

    1. What version of OS X and 1Password are you running on your iMac?
    2. On your iMac, if you enter 1Password's preferences and switch to the Sync tab, what does it say?

Once we know the answers to these questions we should hopefully be in a better position to proceed forward. The good news is, as long as your iMac has a current copy of your vault then we definitely know that one way or another we can have the two Macs syncing.

    Hi @trevojrohnwright,

Thanks for the information! Unfortunately iCloud sync won't work between 1Password 5 and 1Password 4. This is related to the major changes in iCloud that Apple introduced in their new operating systems last fall. 1Password 5 uses the new Apple iCloud ‘CloudKit’ technology which is only available on OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) and iOS 8. So unfortunately you won't be able to use iCloud to sync your 1Password data between OS X 10.10 and 10.8.

You can find more information in our iCloud FAQ, and some more detailed information in this knowledgebase article.

If you're able to upgrade your iMac to Yosemite and 1Password 5, then you'll be able to use iCloud sync in 1Password on both Macs (assuming you're using the Mac App Store version of 1Password 5 on both). Otherwise, you can switch to Dropbox sync.

I'm not sure why the Sync preferences in 1Password 4 are blank, although I suspect that might have something to do with upgrading your iCloud account to the new iCloud Drive on your new MacBook, since that is not backwards-compatible with the iCloud sync service used in OS X 10.9 and lower.

I'm sorry for the confusion about all that! If you need more help or have additional questions, please let us know. Thanks!

I am not trying to sync with iCloud. I don't sync with iCloud. When i sync i do wifi sync. But that's not what this is about. This is about being unable to run 1password on my new Macbook because it won't accept my master password because it says it's found my data in iCloud. I don't know what it means by this. It offers me a password hint which I have never used and would never use and I don't know what it means anyway, It will not let me in; it won't accept my password. I just want to run the program on my new Macbook.

    Hi @trevojrohnwright,

Something does seem quite right here.

In your reply on the 14th you said the Sync tab was just the word vaults. I could imagine that to be the case on your MacBook but you should definitely be seeing more on your iMac if it's running 1Password 4.

Another oddity is your choice of sync method. You haven't mentioned an iOS device but Wi-Fi Sync is only between one Mac and one or more iOS devices. We do have a request for Wi-Fi Sync to include Mac to Mac (or Windows) but at the moment that isn't possible. Between two Macs you have a couple of options; Dropbox, iCloud and for the braver souls that don't like cloud options there is Folder Sync.

Now we can wipe the iCloud data that exists but I'm still not confident on how you were syncing the two machines before this new MacBook.

If you are confident then here is how to remove iCloud data.

    1. On your MacBook go to System Preferences > iCloud.
    2. Click on the Manage... button.
    3. In there you should see an entry for 1Password, select and and then use the delete button that should be visible. I apologise, I'm not an iCloud user myself and as I don't have my test machine handy I can't give the precise name like I would normally want to.

That should stop 1Password for Mac from claiming it can find iCloud data but please do be careful. I've given the instructions in case you are happy with what you're doing and just need to know how to remove the iCloud sync data but if you're not confident then please do help us understand how you've been syncing up until now and how 1Password for Mac is configured to sync on your iMac (which I assume was syncing with your old MacBook).

Yes, I'm sorry, I've made a mess of these replies. Starting again.

The problem is as described. I cannot run 1password on the new Macbook because it says it's found my iCloud data and doesn't recognise my password.

I have an iPad and sync using wifi between the iMac and the iPad. I may have misremembered syncing the iMac with the old macbook. Perhaps I never synced at all. Perhaps I'm thinking of the iPad which I certainly sync using wifi.

My answer to your second question is wrong. That was the answer for the new Macbook. On the iMac the answer would be iCloud, dropbox, folder.

All I really want to do is get started with 1password on the new macbook, i.e. get it to accept my password.

Sorry, and thanks for your patience.

    Hi @trevojrohnwright,

That all helps so thank you

It sounds like you may not have been syncing the iMac and old MacBook so we'll address that afterwards but lets get you up and running first.

If you haven't already, then the instructions I gave above about iCloud are still good and I feel more confident about you doing so now. So just to repeat.

That will delete the iCloud data. When you next start 1Password you should see the following screen.

If you can see that we're making progress. If you don't see that then it sounds like enough of 1Password's support files may have been created that we need to manually wipe them so you can get a clean start. If that's the case then this link to our How do I start over with an empty vault? guide will be what you need.

Once we have the MacBook at this stage we can now work on getting a copy of your vault(s) from your iMac onto your MacBook.

My personal thoughts here are, the easiest way to do this is using a backup from your iMac given you don't have sync in place and we haven't gone over your choices and accounted for your preferences. Here are the steps for that approach.

    1. On your iMac launch 1Password.
    2. Enter 1Password's preferences and switch to the Backup tab.
    3. Click the Backup Now button and then the Show Files button.
    4. Using your preferred approach e.g. pen drive, copy the newest backup file from the Finder window that just opened.
    5. Move this backup to your MacBook.
    6. We have two guides that will help you kickstart 1Password using the backup you just created and copied over. The first is Getting started again on a new computer and the next page is Restore from backup.

At this point your iMac and new MacBook should have identical vaults but you'll probably want to keep them in sync and not just this one snapshot. We have a couple of options depending on preferences. The most versatile option is Dropbox as that spans platforms and versions. Unfortunately iCloud won't be an option if you're running 1Password 4 and 1Password 5 due to the recent changes to iCloud (which are only accessible to iOS 8 and Yosemite). The next option is Folder Sync and that is best used with a pen drive AKA sneakernet. Obviously you may have a few questions there and we can answer all of those. I just figured getting 1Password up and running was the priority and then we can cover syncing.

Keep us informed as to how you get along

On the new macbook I have followed your instructions and removed the 1password entry in iCloud/manage. It has gone. I have even restarted the machine. However 1password still insists that it's found my iCloud "data" and won't accept my password.

    How annoying!

Does your screen look more like this @trevojrohnwright?

If it does, let's take a different approach. The underlined part is clickable and if you do you'll see the following menu.

If you can get that menu then you can use the backup from the iMac that we talked about earlier. Does that help move you forward?

I do apologise, starting up 1Password isn't normally meant to be this much of a trial, it's meant to be a lot smoother.

Yes, the screen looks like that. When i click on the underlined bit however it doesn't give those choices. It gives "use legacy data in icloud" (ticked) or "find another" or "restore from backup" or "create new vault". "Find another" or "restore…" just open finder windows.

I have never seen the "I'm new/I've used it before…" options.

If i do the "start over again with an empty vault…" I presume this will not clear my iMac, just my macbook?

    Hi @trevojrohnwright,

You're correct - if you follow the steps to start over on your MacBook, that will only clear the 1Password data on your MacBook (your iMac won't be changed by that at all).

However it might be easier to simply choose the "restore..." option from the choices you see. That should ask you to choose your backup file, and you can choose the one you copied from your iMac.

If that option doesn't seem to work as it should, you can instead choose "create new vault" and set it up with the same master password that you use on your iMac. You'll end up with an empty vault, and then you can go to the menu for File > Restore..., which will open the Backup preferences window. From there, click the Find Backup button, and select the backup file you copied from your iMac.

If you're still having trouble at this point, you can of course follow the steps to start over, and then follow the steps to restore from the backup file. Please let us know how it all goes, and if you have more questions about that, we'll take it from there. Thanks!
