Update from version 4 to 5

I had a family license activated for 1Password 4. It kept prompting me to update to the latest version (5). The prompt said it was a free update for users, so I updated to 1Password 5. Now it says my "trial period" is expired, and I can no longer edit my passwords or info. It seems my licensing has disappeared with the update. I was going to just purchase a new license for 1Password 5 online, but it won't accept the type of card I have (debit). I find it misleading that I would be encouraged to update my version for "free" if it is going to make me re-purchase the product anyway.

Please let me know how to proceed, and if this is indeed your policy to negate purchased licenses on version upgrades.

The upgrade from 4 to 5 is indeed free, so something must have gone wrong if you purchased 4.

One issue that has come up with quite a few people is that when you purchased 4 you should have got an email with a license file, and the file needs to be used. Due to a bug, some users were able to keep using 4 without the license. The bug was squashed, and it may well be that all you need to do is to apply the license file. The AgileBits people will help you further.

However, as regards the second half of your last sentence, in common with most developers, AgileBits might require a payment for future major updates (such as from 5 to 6, when it appears). You'll just have to wait and see, they might also make such an update free. There's never any requirement to update a program unless it doesn't run on your current operating system.

    Good day, @craigmcginley!

I'm sorry to hear of the trouble you've experienced with the license in 1Password 5. I'll do my best to help you sort this out.

As @danco mentioned, it is definitely a free update. If you've ever purchased a license for 1Password 4 for Mac, then you can use that same license for 1Password 5 for Mac with no further purchase required. How to resolve this issue depends on where you originally purchased 1Password 4, so I'll direct you to our "Trial Expired" troubleshooting page, and you can follow the steps that apply to you to register the app.

Registering the app should unlock all the features and make the "Trial Expired" messages go away. Let us know if you run into any trouble with this, and we'll be happy to provide further assistance. :)
