It appears any secondary vault, is not truly separate from a master password standpoint. I have a work primary vault and I want a totally separate new master pw protected secondary vault that cannot be accessed via the primarily vault. Is that possible? Appreciate. Is there some feasible workaround if the response is no...Thx.

    Hi @Rfgsafcl ,

I've separated your post into its own thread, since we seem to be talking about something different than the original thread.

1Password's multiple vault feature was designed so that you still only have to remember one password, no matter how many vaults you create. Your primary vault holds the encryption keys for all of your secondary vaults. This means that unlocking your primary vault will give you quick and easy access to all of your data, regardless of which vault it is stored in.

However, you still can unlock a secondary vault on its own. In the main app, use 1Password > Switch Vault menu. (In the 1Password mini, click on the lock image on the lock screen to select the secondary vault.) Please note that when you unlock the secondary vault alone, all other vaults will remain locked. You won't be able to copy items between vaults, and you will need to enter your Master Password to view another vault.

If you describe your use case to us in a little bit more detail, we might be able to provide a bit of a better workaround.

Megan, thanks for you response. Trying to determine the best way to keep the business info completely separate from my personal and vise versa. I guess I am trying to figure out if this works. Are you saying that there is no way from the primary vault to get to secondary vaults if set up as you describe? Or to ensure hard wall, do I need another solution? Thx.

    Hi @Rfgsafcl,

I believe it's possible to up 1Password in separate Mac user accounts. Each Mac user account would have completely separate user data for 1Password. So each user would be able to set up their own Primary vault in 1Password with different Master Passwords, as if they were using a different computer. In your case, you could set up one user account for work and one for personal stuff. This might be your best option for "ensuring a hard wall."

However, I'm curious about why you're wanting this hard wall. As @Megan mentioned, if you describe your use case to us in a little bit more detail, we might be able to provide a bit of a better workaround. Additionally, the more we know about how users want to use 1Password and why, the better we can design our software to fit your needs. :)

You should be the only person with your Master Password (and it should be strong), so even if your primary vault is shared with other users, it's only that vault that is shared. They won't have access to your other vault unless you specifically share that one, too.

If you'd like to make the primary vault your personal vault and make the secondary vault the (possibly shared?) work vault, let us know and we can help you make that happen.
