Lost websites

I seem to have had many web addresses removed from logins.
I have done some synchs with iPads and iPhone 6+.
How do I restore the missing Web addresses!

    It would help us to help you if you were to let us know:

    1. what version of 1P you're running on your Mac;
    2. what version of 1P you're running on your iOS devices;
    3. how you sync your 1P data (wifi, Dropbox or iCloud).

    Please click on the link in point 2 of my post above: that will take you to the relevant knowledge base article.

    I have a nasty feeling your problems could be caused by using two sync methods for your 1P data. Is there any particular reason why you're doing that?

    Hi @dhanson2go,

    Stephen is spot on, we would recommend sticking to a single form of syncing. That isn't to say you can't change your mind but we would really recommend not jumping backwards and forwards between two or more as 1Password has to treat two vaults as being very separate when you first set up sync.

    Now your Mac routinely makes backups so we can use this to discover the last time the website fields were present.

    Before starting I would recommend creating a fresh backup so you know everything is saved. Enter 1Password's preferences and switch to the Backup tab. In there click the Backup Now button. That's our safety net.

    Still in the backup tab, I would recommend starting with the second newest (so ignore the one you just created) and select it. The Restore button will now be enabled. Click on it and step through the confirmation messages. 1Password will shut down as part of the restore process and when you launch it again you've just restored your first backup. Does this backup have the missing information? If it doesn't, return to the Backup tab in 1Password's preferences and select the next oldest. Repeat until you find the last vault to contain the missing information.

    Now here is where it gets a bit tricky. We've found a vault with the right information but what if you've made a lot of additions, modifications or deletions to your vault since this backup? It might not be possible to simply revert to this older version. Maybe it is though but that's not something we can easily tell, it will be based on your knowledge of your vault.

    Let's say you the backup was really new and you're confident nothing has been lost. That means we can keep this backup. Now sync was disabled as part of the restore process because we don't want whatever happened to mess things up to happen again. In this case you'd probably be safest with the following steps.

    1. Select the Help > troubleshooting > Reset iCloud Data drop down menu option. This will purge the sync data which will contain the damaged items.
    2. Set up iCloud Sync on your Mac once again. This will create a fresh copy based on this vault.
    3. Follow our guide, How do I start over with an empty vault? on your iPhone. This will clear 1Password for iOS and when you set it up and point it to iCloud it will pick up the new iCloud sync data that you created in step 2.

    At this point both your Mac and iOS device are using the backup as the now current vault with all of your website fields hopefully intact.

    What if though, you've made changes and you can't afford to lose those changes?

    Well there isn't a nice, clean and easy solution I'm afraid but we can still help... slightly...

    1. With the backup containing your website fields still loaded, I would recommend exporting this copy of the vault. You can do this by selecting the File > Export > All Items... drop down menu option.
    2. Enter your Master Password when requested and save this unencrypted version of your vault to your Desktop in the .1pif format.
    3. Return to the Backups tab in 1Password's preferences and select the backup you made at the start of this post. Restore it.
    4. So now it seems we're back at where you started. You've got a vault full of missing website fields. The different is we also have a copy of the vault with the fields present. Now I would like you to create a temporary secondary vault by going to the 1Password > New Vault... drop down menu option. Call it something like old or backup, whatever you like and don't worry about remembering the password.
    5. Make sure you're in this new and empty vault. If you're not go to 1Password > Switch to Vault and select the new one.
    6. Now go to the File > Import... drop down menu option. Select the .1pif you created in steps 1 & 2 and press the enter key as a bug means the Open button won't respond to being clicked.
    7. Don't forget to re-enable sync for your Primary vault as all the restoring of backups will have disabled it.
    8. Make sure to now securely delete the .1pif on your Desktop as it is an unencrypted copy of your vault. We did need it but no longer so make sure nobody can stumble upon it.

    What you now have is your real vault as your Primary and a backup sitting alongside it. Now here comes the tedious bit. Firstly, select the Logins category in the Sidebar. Now you can sort your vault by Website using the little selector below the search field in the Item List pane (on that page it's under Item list header) and at the bottom of the list will be any Login items with no website field. You can look these items up in the secondary vault and copy the website field back into the item. Now if you're positive the only difference is the missing website field you could copy the entire item back into your Primary vault but you have to be careful because it won't try to merge, it will simply overwrite. So say you have a Login item with a missing website field but it also has a new password. Copying the item from the secondary vault back into the primary would overwrite this new password and it's now gone. To copy an item from one vault to another select the item you would like to copy and then go to the Item > Share > Primary > Copy drop down menu option to copy the selected item from wherever you are into your primary vault. Don't forget, if there is an existing item it gets overwritten which is why you have to be careful.

    When you're eventually finished repairing the damage you can safely delete the secondary vault as you don't need to keep it. That's why remembering the password for this vault wasn't too important - it was never going to be kept.

    So, there's a massive amount there to digest. You may have lots of questions so please do ask if you do. We've covered how to find a backup with your website fields and the two main situations I can think of that might apply once you've found a good copy of the vault. If you're uncomfortable with anything don't do anything, instead just post here voicing your concerns. After all we're here to help :smile:

    Hi @dhanson2go,

    If you'd like to learn more about the security of syncing over iCloud, we have an article you can read that discusses that subject. In fact, there's a whole Security & Privacy section in our knowledgebase for you to peruse if you're interested. Of course, we take security very seriously, and you can feel free to ask us about any particular worries you may have.

    Try not to be too intimidated by all the steps littlebobbytables laid out; he's just trying to cover your bases and give clear, detailed instructions. Just take it one step at a time, and feel free to post here if you run into any trouble along the way. We're here for you! :)
