Which Master Password is this asking for?

I'm trying to install 1Password 5 on a new Mac. I have the master password set and sync'd via iCloud between my Macbook Pro, my old Mac, and my iPhone and iPad. I know what the Master Password is. And yet, this is NOT the Master Password that's protecting the iCloud data when I try to sync this new computer. Why not?

I have no idea which password this is asking for now. If I do a restore from a backup I took from one of my other devices, will that screw up syncing?

Help!

Michael

    Hi @Michael Matthews,

So we know you've installed 1Password 5 on this new Mac but I'm wondering what you're running on the older machines. I only ask as iCloud sync changed a lot in 1Password 5 in relation to Apple's sweeping changes in iCloud Drive and related frameworks. For more on this our page, Why does iCloud require iOS 8, OS X 10.10, and the Mac App Store? may prove enlightening.

If it's the case that you're using the old iCloud everywhere else it might be picking up a different and older vault, say from Dropbox?

Anyway, what I can confirm is you can use a backup from another machine to initialise 1Password 5 on your new Mac. You can easily locate the backups on your other Macs by going to the Backup tab in 1Password's preferences and clicking on the Show Files button. If you're in doubt at all click the Backup Now button first to manually create a backup first.

When you start up 1Password on the new Mac you should see something like this screen.

The part underlined is actually clickable and if you do so you will see the following options.

Select the Restore from backup... option to use the backup file you've copied across.

That will at least allow you to get started on your new Mac.

To get it into sync with the other devices it would be useful to know what you're working with. By this I mean what version of 1Password are you running on each Mac or device. Once we know this we'll be better placed to advise.
