    Forgive me if you already know this, but l'm starting with a basic point. :) 1P for Mac and 1P for iOS are completely separate products. In other words, if you need 1P for Mac you have to buy it. The cost of it has nothing to do with whether or not you have 1P for iOS.

    1Password is licensed per person and per platform, rather than per device. You can read more about AgileBits' approach to software licensing in this knowledge base article.

    You can buy 1P for Mac either from the Mac App Store or direct from the AgileBits store. There are two things to bear in mind:

    1. If you ever want to use iCloud to sync 1P data between your Mac and iPhone you must buy 1P from the Mac App Store because the version from the AgileBits store doesn't support iCloud sync (following changes made by Apple on the launch of OS X Yosemite). Both versions support sync of 1P data by either local wifi or Dropbox.
    2. If you have owned an earlier version of 1P for Mac you may be entitled to an upgrade discount if you buy from the AgileBits store. That discount won't be available if you buy from the Mac App Store.

    Now on the assumption you already have 1P for Mac in order to access the 1P vault you have on your phone you have to sync that data between your phone and your Mac. This knowledge base article will help you with that:

    Sync options compared: Dropbox vs. iCloud vs. Wi-Fi

    (Just follow the appropriate link in that article to set up the sync option you want.)

    I just read his answer because the mac was down and was at the apple store. I picked it up a week ago and no started over again. I realize now that I have to buy the full product from the app store to be able to sync with my information on my phone. I can't believe I am spending $49 for the app that I already spent $10 for on my cell phone.
    This is insane but I guess you guys have had to do it so I have to as well. I just think it's wrong to have to pay twice for the same product. Call me crazy but had I not spent $10 already for the one I have for the phone, I would have abandoned this app a long time ago. I simply will never recommend it. Thanks for all your help. If I am missing any information, please enlighten me. Thank you both a lot.

    @kodum28:

    I just think it's wrong to have to pay twice for the same product.

    What I suggest you do is to download the the AgileBits store version which will operate as a free trial for (I think) 30 days. That way you need pay nothing to find out that in fact 1P for Mac is an entirely different, and far more versatile, product than 1P for iOS. Even when the trial expires you won't be locked out of your data (although you won't then be able to add new data unless you then buy a licence).

    @kodum28: Sorry of the confusion! To be clear, if it was the same product, the iOS app would run on your Mac (or vice versa), but they're very different. It simply isn't possible for one to work on the other, and we also put a lot of care into making each a good fit for the device it will run on.

    Now, it's entirely up to you where you spend your hard-earned money, but we at AgileBits put a lot of time and energy into both developing new versions of 1Password and supporting you and the rest of our awesome customers, but the only way we can do this is by charging a sustainable price for our products (which we think is fair).

    But again, if you don't feel that we charge a fair price for our products, you've always got options. You can continue using the trial, or simply wait for a sale (which we have more often than you think). We actually just ran a sale earlier this month, and I'm sure we will have others in the future.

    I don't know about you, but I just can't work for free. I've got bills to pay, and frankly my wife would kill me! So I am very grateful for you and anyone else who has supported AgileBits so my colleagues and I can continue to make a living doing what we love. :)
