Multiple sync channels

I use IPassword between my main Mac Pro and several iOS devices. I use Dropbox to sync, but would prefer to use iCloud. But I also occasionally use Windows and Linux and would also like those machines access to the vault. However, it can be intermittent or manual sync instead of the auto sync I get between the Apple devices. So...

Would it be possible to use iCloud on the Apple devices, but on demand/manual sync to the Windows and Linux machines using WiFi? Any other way to achieve this?

  • Hi @UKenGB,

Thanks for writing in. My recommendation would be to continue using Dropbox to sync the Mac, iOS, Windows and Linux devices. It's the only fully cross platform sync solution we have. If you really wanted to use iCloud, you could switch sync settings on the Mac periodically to manually sync an agilekeychain or opvault for the Windows/Linux devices. This would work, but every time you switch sync solutions we have to run full conflict resolution on every item which can lead to some item conflicts and no one likes those. The best way to avoid that is to limit the editing of items to a single device in that case. As for Wi-Fi sync, there's currently no way to Wi-Fi sync between two desktop computers. We only support Wi-Fi syncing from a desktop to a mobile device.

    I hope this helps.

I just don't need the instant update of a full sync, like DropBox for those machines. Would it not be possible to manually copy the vault to the Windows and linux machines as and when I need to?

  • Hi @UKenGB,

Unfortunately, you can't copy the actual database file because we use different formats on different platforms. I assume on Linux you're using 1Password for Windows via WINE, or another AgileKeychain reader. You need an AgileKeychain or OPVault file for those, and that's not 1Password for Mac's native format, it only uses it for sync. So unfortunately you end up needing to go through sync for that.

I'm just using OS X and iOS at the moment, syncing via DropBox and it's using AgileKeyChain. At least, that's the file it appears to be storing on DropBox. My Windows and Linux requirement is extremely rare, but if I am using one of those on another machine, it would be handy to have all the 1Password info to hand.

Could I copy that AgileKeyChain to Windows and/or Linux to use it there (once 1Password purchased for that platform of course)?

I'm guessing that switching to iCloud sync would eliminate my manual access to that vault file however, but trying to get a better understanding of what's what.

  • Hi @UKenGB,

In that case I'd recommend that you simply setup Dropbox on both the Windows and Linux computers and use the same AgileKeychain that's in Dropbox. That would be the simplest solution.

I really think putting iCloud into the mix would just complicate things needlessly. When you're dealing with non-Apple devices, I highly recommend people just ignore iCloud sync.

    Hope this helps.
