new master password on mac <-> old master password on IOS while using synced/same vault?

Hi,
I recently changed my master password via OS X-Desktop App Version 6.0.1 and expected my IOS-Client, which uses the same vault and was synchronized after the password change, to be secured via the same, new password.

But I was surprised, that I could still use the old master password and had to change it manually.

My understanding was, that all devices, since they are synchronized, should use the same password.
And when I change it with any device, the new password should apply to all devices at once, or at least after synchronization.

Did I made any mistakes?

IOS 1password Version is 6.2.1
IOS Version is 9.2

1Password Version: 6.01

OS Version: OS X 10.11.2

  • Hi @kachd,

Thanks for taking the time to write in. You are correct: the fact that the Master Password has changed should sync across all devices. For this to happen though the device must be unlocked using the old Master Password, allow the sync to happen, re-lock 1Password, and then unlock using the new password. Once you've unlocked with the new password once the old password should no longer work.

    I hope that helps!

    Hi Ben,

thanks a lot for your quick response!
Though your explanation did work for my question just fine, I find it quite confusing that seemingly I have to "overwrite" the old master password with the new one to get rid of the old one..

Is that not kind of a safety-issue?
I mean, maybe on of my devices get stolen and I want to set up a new, strong password. (or any other more likely event, why I have to change my password)
As it is now, the new password will not take effect as long as the other person won't use the new passphrase...
The device will still sync, although the passwords of the vaults differ?

    It this by intention?

    best regards,

  • It is an interesting technical challenge. We've written, in more detail, about it here:

Does that help answer your questions?
