Why does 1P always hang when I first launch an updated version?

This happens every time the OS X version updates. Whenever a newly updated version of 1P launches for the first time, it always gives the spinning beach ball of death. The only remedy is to force quit 1P, log out of my user account, log back in, then relaunch. This usually fixes the problem. But why does this always happen when an updated version is first launched?

  • Hi @Mr. Laser Beam ,

As you may know, 1Password is actually two apps - the main app, and 1Password mini, which is embedded inside the main app. When an update happens, the old version is deleted, and replaced with the new version. When the app launches the first time after updating, it tells OS X to launch the mini. OS X then tries to launch the older copy because that's what it had a record of before. So now it has to search for the new one, which takes some time. Depending on the speed of your system, hard disk, what else is running, etc. this can take longer. Sometimes it's instantly, sometimes it's not.

Unfortunately, there's no way to tell OS X to say "hey, it's right here" - we can only say "go launch the 1Password mini app" by providing an app identifier.

There's two things which we're doing to make this experience better.

    1. We've sent a request to Apple to provide the capability to tell OS X the exact location of the mini app so it will launch it immediately. There's no guarantee this will happen as it's up to Apple to accept and assign priority to that request.
    2. We can make the process a little more pleasant. We are working on that now, so at least you will know what is going on rather than just get a spinning beach ball. I don't have a date when this will happen, but we certainly do want to make this better.

I hope that alleviates your concerns. Please reply if you have any questions.

    Cheers,
    Kevin

I just updated to version 6.1. The new version makes it a little bit easier to do this:

    • At first launch, it gives me a dialog box that says "Connecting to 1Password mini..." which then tells me it's unable to find said mini.

    • I'm then advised to relaunch 1P.

    • Upon doing that, everything works.

So at least it's no longer necessary to log out of my OSX user account and back in again. Every little bit helps. :)

  • Hi @Mr. Laser Beam ,

I'm glad it helps easing the annoyance a little bit. We're by no means finished trying to solve the issue, and continue to figure out how to make it better.

    Cheers,
    Kevin
