If I were to lose my computer how would I go about finding my passwords on Icloud? I have icloud sync set up, but I cannot locate the passwords anywhere.

@dinosaurs if you have iCloud sync set up you're presumably syncing your 1Password data to another device, so if you lose your computer the 1Password data will be on the other device. What am I missing?

I'm backing up to icloud drive itself, but I do not see any of my data on icloud. I'm not syncing with another device.

@dinosaurs - You won't be able to see your sync data by looking in iCloud Drive from the Finder, although iCloud Drive must be active for sync to work. The sync process makes use of technology from iCloud called CloudKit, but the results won't show up in the iCloud Drive Folder on your Mac.

You can find the sync file, if you want to badly enough. Open iCloud from System Preferences, then click the Manage button in the lower right corner. That will display the things you are storing there, and you iCloud sync data will be among them.

@hawkmoth OK, I found it but it does not show me my passwords. The issue is that if I were to lose my mac I would also lose all of my passwords. Is there a way to recover my passwords if I do not have my computer?

You won't be able to see your passwords directly from that file. It can only be read by one of the 1Password applications. It's encrypted, after all, so it needs a reader that can deal with that. At the moment, unless you have access to an installed 1Password application on a desktop machine or a handheld device, you won't have access to your passwords in iCloud - or in Dropbox, for that matter.

If you lost your Mac and don't have another device, you will be able to retrieve your data when you install a fresh copy on your Mac's replacement.

There is a new product - 1Password for Familes. It has a web interface that would allow you to access your data through any web browser. You would need to be really careful about the computer you use for that purpose, though. If the computer itself has been compromised, you're toast. 1Password for Families is sold on a subscription basis for $5 per month. The basic ideas about how it works are discussed in the blog post announcing it - here.

    Hi @dinosaurs,

I'm glad to see that Hawkmoth has been helping you out here! I'm sorry for the confusion about 1Password, and I hope that things are a bit more clear now.

Of course, if you have any further questions, we're here to help. :)

@hawkmoth @Megan So if I lose my computer, I can just sign back into my account if I download the application on another computer correct?

  • Yes. :) As long as iCloud sync is setup properly within 1Password:

Sync with iCloud | 1Password 6 for Mac
