iCloud sync between computers and mobile devices

I am having all sorts of issues syncing my vaults between my iMac, MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad. Originally I had Dropbox sync enabled which always worked really well. I have since pulled all my data out of Dropbox and tried to set up sync via iCloud. I haven't been able to get it to work. I will add or modify a password / login or even a secure note on one device, and the modification will not show up on the other device, even days later.

I am running v6.1 (60005) from the Agilebits Store on my computers and the latest update for my mobile devices. I read that there might be problems mixing iOS app store versions with Agilebits store versions but never found a solution.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
Aaron

I should probably say that I have already tried the obvious things like reinstalling the apps and deleting iCloud data and starting fresh. No dice.

    Thanks

    Hi @lawyer_aaron,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble getting iCloud sync to behave properly. You mention trying the 'obvious' things, but I'd just like to confirm: have you read through our troubleshooting guide?

    Hi @Megan,

Thanks for the quick response. I have indeed tried all the steps in the troubleshooting guide with not luck. Is there a specific order in which I should enable the sync?

    Thanks
    Aaron

  • Hi @lawyer_aaron,

No, there's no specific order that you should need to do that in. Typically with iCloud "it just works." There's not all that much that can go wrong. The number one thing to make sure is that you're using the same Apple ID on all devices.

Let's start from the simplest ones: can you enable iCloud Sync on the iPhone and iPad? Can you get data to sync between those two? If we can get those two syncing, then we'll add a Mac.

When you enable iCloud on the devices, does it warn you that it has to merge the vaults?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hi @rickfillion,

Looks like I can sync between my mobile devices, but not between my computers or between the computers and the mobile devices. When I enable icloud sync for the first time on any device it does warn me about merging vaults. That is, every time except for the experiment I ran of disabling sync on all devices and deleting the data from iCloud. Then the first device I added didn't receive the error (which it shouldn't have, so good news there).

    Thanks
    Aaron

    Hi @lawyer_aaron,

Looks like I can sync between my mobile devices...

Great! It sounds like there's some progress, and now we just need to get that working on your Macs as well.

From your description, I'm not sure if you're choosing to merge vaults when you try to re-enable iCloud sync and see that message. If you're not merging when prompted, iCloud sync won't be enabled, so perhaps that explains why it's not currently working on your Macs?

Just to be clear, the 'merge' message is normal/expected behavior, and not an error. After deleting your 1Password data from iCloud, re-enabling iCloud sync from the first device will not cause that message to appear because there's nothing to merge - 1Password simply makes a copy of your vault in iCloud. Then, when you re-enable iCloud sync on another device, 1Password needs to merge the local copy of your vault with the new copy it finds in iCloud. Most of the data is probably the same in both copies of your vault, but there are probably some small differences because of changes you made that haven't synced to each device yet.

The 'merge' message is just a warning, in case you don't actually want to start syncing both copies of your vault with each other. But in this case, you do. When you choose to merge, it will finally sync any un-synced changes between the local vault on your device and the vault in iCloud. Once it does that, you'll have all the same data in both locations. Nothing will be deleted unless you deleted it yourself.

When you re-enable iCloud sync in 1Password on your Macs and choose to merge, does iCloud sync start to work correctly between your Macs & iOS devices?

    @Drew_AG

Sorry I should have been more specific. I am choosing to merge the data when 1password finds existing data in iCloud. I only pointed out the lack of the message on the first device to show that the delete / new sync functionality was working as designed and my data really was making it to the cloud.

I just tried to disable and re-enable iCloud sync on my Macbook, selected ok at the message that the data would be merged, and let it sync. Unfortunately it is still not working correctly. There are about a half dozen passwords, logins, and secure notes that are not syncing. These are the ones that I have created since moving from Dropbox sync to iCloud. Two in particular are secure notes that I created for the express purpose of testing the sync, one on my MacBook and one on my iPhone, and they have not synced correctly. The note on the iPhone makes it to my iPad but not to my computers and the note on my MacBook doesn't go anywhere.

Also digging a little deeper into the iOS sync, it looks like there are two logins on my iPhone that are not populating to my iPad, but the note that I created on my iPhone is making it over to the iPad. This is a real head scratcher.

    Thanks
    Aaron

    Hi Aaron ( @lawyer_aaron ),

I'm sorry to hear that this is still not working smoothly for you! I think the quickest way to get to the bottom of this is to take a closer look at your system.

I'd like to ask you to create some Diagnostics Reports, one from each of your devices:

Attach the Diagnostics Report(s) to an email message addressed to support+forum@agilebits.com.

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report(s) in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report(s) in our inbox.

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here so we can track down the report(s) and ensure that this issue is dealt with quickly. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks very much!

    Hi @lawyer_aaron,

We've received your Diagnostics Report - thanks for sending it in! I've updated the email thread with the necessary details from this forum discussion so that it is easier for our support team to get up to speed with the issue. Someone from the support team will get back to you as soon as possible with some further information. We'll keep the conversation going directly via email to avoid complicating things between here and there. :)
