File attachment to a Secure Note question

Hi. I just added .jpg to a Secure Note via 1Password for Mac. However, after sync, it doesn't show on my iPhone. Am I missing something?

    Hi @tomlusch,

Can I ask a couple of questions and see if we spot any obvious reason.

    1. What version of 1Password for iOS do you have?
    2. Do you have the Pro features enabled in 1Password for iOS? The Pro features are via an optional in-app purchase so it is possible you're running 1Password for iOS in its default free state. If you're unsure at all going to Settings > Pro Features will either show it is activated or ask if you would like to purchase the Pro features.
    3. If you make a minor edit to say the text of the Secure Note or add a new custom field as a test do you see this change in 1Password for iOS?

Each answer will tell us something and with a little luck narrow down where the issue may be. What I can say is 1Password 6 can sync attachments via Wi-Fi as I do this myself. All we need to do is discover what's stopping you from seeing the file on your iPhone now

    1. Thank you for link on how to check the version. 6.3.1
    2. It tells me "Thank you for buying 1Password's Pro Features..." and that I'm awesome. :) I presume that means it is activated.
    3. I made a text edit to the Secure Note (from iMac end), and it synced to iPhone okay.

Since my original post, a couple times when opening 1Password on my iPhone, I've gotten the following alert message: "Please unlock 1Password on your Mac for Wi-Fi syncing to continue: 1Password encountered a problem." I did so, but I have yet to see the attachment from the iPhone side.

    Hi @tomlusch,

You're correct, you do have the Pro features and they are activated and thank you for confirming that sync is working.

As for the message, hopefully it's self explanatory although I find it annoying as it pops up three times for me (we have an ongoing report on this to see it improved).

Okay so we know it isn't anything obvious now, the task is to figure out what it is.

    I'm wondering:

    1. Have you been a long term 1Password user and previous used the likes of iCloud Sync and Dropbox Sync with this vault?
    2. If you create a brand new Secure Note and attach a copy of the same JPEG to it does it sync or does it have the same problem?

Apologies for the extra questions while we try to pin down what the cause is.

    1. I purchased 1Password 3 for Mac back in Nov 2010. I have never used iCloud Sync, nor Dropbox Sync.

    2. I created a brand new Secure Note, attached copy of same JPEG, and it appeared on my iPhone! Then, I copied all the text from my previous note, into the new note, and I was once again unable to see the JPEG. I have the feeling it is related to the amount of text in the note. The number of characters in my note is 2,929 (includes invisible characters).

I removed text from my 2nd created (copied) note, and found that at 2,338 characters (including invisibles) is where the attachment becomes invisible. However, after analyzing more closely, it appears to be related to the number of lines displayed on the iPhone. At 70 lines, all is good. At 71 lines, the attachment is no longer visible for selection.

    Greetings @tomlusch,

I think I understand now and I suspect we're going to find it isn't as bad as it seems. That isn't to say there isn't room for improvement here but I believe the attachment did sync and that it's just hiding behind a not very obvious interface. So given your excellent testing I have two screenshots, one from an iPhone and one from an iPad - let's see if they match what you're seeing.

So it looks like not just the attachment but other actions aren't visible and you're right, it's connected to the size of the note.

It's a UI thing though as you're no doubt trying to scroll but are doing so from within the very large area for the actual text. I can't remember which version but we used to handle the text differently but it was causing issues so we changed to what we currently do now.

Here's part of the same image from the iPhone screenshot but I've highlighted what seems to be a fairly innocuous area. If you try to scroll by placing your finger on this you should find you can reveal all of the normal actions but more importantly the attachment too. This same area on an iPad will have a similar effect.

With this new knowledge can you now see the attachment when viewing your original Secure Note with the full text?

Yes, that is exactly what I've been doing (trying to scroll downward from within the text area). Touching in the proper place (on that bar), I now get to scroll the entire record! Intuitive it was NOT! Thank you for the excellent explanation as to what I was missing.

    Hi @tomlusch,

I'm in total agreement with you, I can easily see how it isn't intuitive in the slightest and could easily catch anybody out regardless of their familiarity with iOS. I will use this conversation as an example so that if something can be done that we have good reason to.

I'm glad we could discover the cause of the 'missing' attachment

Yes, it could even be so very easy to forget that one has an attachment to one's Secure Note. Thank you again for the great support!
