Vault Backup How-To?

How does AgileBits recommend that a user's vaults be backed up all at once? I am aware that individual vaults can be backed up but that's not practical for a many-vault setup. My question also applies to Team and Family vaults.

1Password's easy to use backup tool in Preferences is named 'Backup'. That tool works well for backing up the Primary vault. By naming it 'Backup', users might think that all their vault data is also backed up by this tool.

  • Hi @fredbrooks,

Thanks for writing in with your concern about how to do effective backups of your 1Password data.

Its important to know that 1Password vault files, specifically agilekeychain and opvault are not actually the primary storage of that data. They are simply a conduit to get the data from one instance of 1Password to another.

With that in mind, 1Password backs up its database files which are the primary storage for that data on an automatic and continuing basis. You can view this in the Preferences window on the Backups tab. This is only the case if you have at least 1 vault present that isn't part of a 1Password Team/Family/Individual Account and and this backup does not include any vaults from 1Password Accounts.

If you have no non-Account vaults present then the Backups tab will not be visible at all. In this scenario the data is still cached locally in a similar database to what non-Accounts use but the authoritative source is what you have on the Accounts server. You can still backup the database file that includes all your locally cached Accounts data, as an extra measure of safety. Currently that data resides in two different directories depending on which version of 1Password you have installed (Mac App Store ~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/Library/Data or AgileBits Store ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Data). The files for non-account vaults will be in OnePassword.sqlite and the ones for Account vaults will be B5.sqlite.

The Backup tool only applies to non-Account vaults, but it does backup all non-Account vaults. If you have more than one you can verify this by looking at the file name, if you have 2 non-Account vaults the file will say (2 Profiles).

Let us know if you have any additional questions.

    Rudy
