Rich Icon submissions
Good Evening,
Is it possible to "submit" Rich Icon suggestions to Agilebits for consideration?
I have a respectable collection that may be of some use to other users.
Thank You!

Hi @cruise2001,
Thanks for writing in. Unfortunately there's no good way for us to do that. If you know of any big sites whose icons we don't have or that the ones we have are out of date, you can let us know and we can try to get those updated.
I'd love for us to have a better system for those things.

Hello,
I've complied a list. When I get a moment, I'll post it here. It seems many entries simply grab the favicon. Favicons are icons, but not 'rich'. :)

In some cases, you're right, we've grabbed the site's favicon. In many cases we used the highest resolution icon available (usually the apple touch icon), and in some cases we've actually redrawn the icon if it was a big company that didn't provide high resolution artwork that we could find for the icon. It's a rather manual process from our end.

The small images on a sites Twitter page work most of the time. Dimensions are correct and design works well.

I appreciate the additional information, I'll have to pass that onto Rick :+1:

That's an interesting idea. I don't think we considered that. Thanks! :)

Do you mean their Twitter avatar? Or something else?
I have been manually adding the Twitter avatar for many sites without a rich icon, so I would love it if 1Password could do that (semi) automatically for me...

I have added about 30 this way. I'm unsure if it is referenced as an "avatar", but it's plausible.
If 1Password were able to automate this process, the time saving would be exponential.

We did indeed grab favicons at one point, but now we're adding things manually upon request and demand. I'd really love to automate it, but doing so in a great way is tough. Favicons are typically low-resolution (16px square, perhaps 32) and don't look great in the app the way they are. Touch icons can be better, but not every site has them. I've personally been constructing some icons based on logos from companies just because the actual icon they have is only 128px square. We want it to look good, to match the 1Password experience. :)

Hi, is there any update on the possibility of crowd-sourcing (with manual approval) of the rich icons? I don't have a mac so I can't use the manual icon adding, I think either more comprehensive rich icons or the option for adding custom icons on windows (ideally both! :P) would be very beneficial for making 1Password a better product.

@ajh0912: No. It's something we might be able to do down the road, but there is literally no facility for this in place in any of the apps or on our servers. So it's a "someday maybe", and not something that can happen short term.
That said, custom icons are coming to the new Windows app. We definitely want this too. I can't say exactly when, but we've already got some of this in place under the hood so it's just a matter of having the time to flesh it out once we have time around all of the other features we're working on there. ;)

Maybe you can hire an intern to do this?

Hi @jimthing
Frankly these features aren't as built-out as you're expecting / wishing for. The idea is to give the user a visual hit as to which item they are selecting. To that end we primarily focus on about the top 1000 web sites on the internet. As there are billions of websites, and it isn't uncommon that companies change their branding, it isn't practical for us to devote a lot of resources to tracking down much more than that. To answer your questions:
1) How can users tell which entries in our current logins list are a "Smart" icon (generated by 1P) vs. ones we may have imported ourselves previously ages ago?
The only way I'm aware of to do so is to edit the item, click the icon, and tap delete. That would remove any custom icon and replace it with the current Rich Icon if one is available. If you want to keep the change, hit save. If you don't, hit cancel.
2) When the icon is old / wrong / has been updated to a newer/better/clearer one (or doesn't have one at all); how can users deal with this?
If it doesn't update automatically you can force a refresh by turning rich icons off then back on.
3) If a login doesn't have an icon appear automatically on edit>saving, how does a user know if there's a Smart one available from 1P, or whether we have to add one ourselves if we want one?
I'm not sure I follow. Can you provide an example? If you save a Login item with an appropriate
website
field, and we have a Rich Icon for that website, as long as you have connectivity to our service a Rich Icon will be put in place at the time of the save action. If that isn't happening we either don't have an icon for the website specified, or you aren't connected to the rich icon server. In the latter case turning rich icons off then back on when you are connected should do the trick.these sodding icons...
and
Such a small thing's functionality is all so hidden from proper implementation documentation on site, as to end up being completely bloody annoying to use and deal with!! And don't just reply with 'you shouldn't have to worry about it as a user' because that means absolutely nothing whatsoever. Sort it out.
Was that really necessary? The folks in this forum are here to try and help you. The attitude you bring reflects in the attitude you'll get back. If you want our customer service folks to advocate for your position we'll be much more inclined to do so if you're being courteous.
Ben
