Is having a membership (online) AND keeping it in Dropbox possible?

After Dropbox dropped support for some version of their API, I can no longer sync with it on my iOS 9 device (and updating is not an option at this point in time) I am considering a membership.

However, I am a HUGE fan of Dropbox and keeping things in it, and I would love to keep my vault in it despite also doing the membership which I gather is all online stuff?

So, is it possible to have it in both t the same time?

    No, it's not possible.

The only workaround would be to export your data in plaintext and then save it very securely in an AES-256 encrypted ZIP file or by encrypting it with PGP.

@darrenNZ: I think one of us may be misunderstanding the question.

After Dropbox dropped support for some version of their API, I can no longer sync with it on my iOS 9 device (and updating is not an option at this point in time) I am considering a membership.

I could be mistaken about this, but I believe you should be able to use 1Password 6 on iOS 9 and 10. The only requirement for Dropbox is that you update 1Password, 6.7 or higher. 1Password 7 is not required to sync with Dropbox currently, though they may change their APIs again in the future.

However, I am a HUGE fan of Dropbox and keeping things in it, and I would love to keep my vault in it despite also doing the membership which I gather is all online stuff?

To be clear, you can continue storing one or more 1Password vaults in Dropbox and syncing them that way...but I wouldn't recommend it, as that will be in no way connected to your 1Password.com account, which can cause a lot of headaches for you. Honestly, one of the best things about 1Password.com memberships compared to syncing with Dropbox is not having to deal with sync configuration on each device for each vault you use. I can't stress that enough. It's very freeing. :)

So, is it possible to have it in both t the same time?

Yes, but perhaps not the way you mean. But then again, I may be misunderstanding. If you'll let me know more about what you're trying to accomplish I'm sure I can help though. :)

Although normally using newer devices now, 1Password 6.9.1 runs fine on my iPad 2 with iOS 9.3.5 and iPhone 5c with iOS 10.3.3. So you surely couldn't be mistaken unless I'm making that up.

Yep, and that's mentioned in feature-specific table in System requirements for 1Password (iOS). Currently, only Face ID requires 1Password 7 and, of course, an iPhone X. :)

Hey, thanks for the replies. I am unable to run the required 1Password version (6.7+) on my device since I run 9.0.2 (I am jailbroken and also use it as a development device, so updating it is not an option).

My intention with having Dropbox as well was mainly as a backup to the 1Password account. So that all data I have is constantly pushed into my Dropbox, even if it would't read from it in daily usage. It could even be readonly for all I care.
So let's say my devices all burn up at the same time as Agilebits suddenly have an outage or goes out of business - at least I could open the backed up file neatly stored in my Dropbox folder.

Does this make more sense? Or is it still just not possible.

@jonathanson: Ah, thanks for clarifying. There isn't a solution to this then. Dropbox changed their APIs last year, and we released 6.7 over the summer to support that. The've since disabled the older APIs, so it will not be possible for you to sync your 1Password data with Dropbox on that device. That in and of itself sucks, but there's a larger problem looming ahead of you: outdated iOS releases and jailbreaking are not supported, so you'l not only be unable to use future version of 1Password (and probably many other apps), but you're missing countless critical security updates (not least of which within the last 6-9 months), with more on the way. And while we don't currently have concrete plans to disable sever access for outdated version of 1Password, we will at some point as we continue improving the service and the apps to go with it. And, for example, if a security flaw were found, we'd have to patch it and disable access for outdated versions to ensure that those lagging behind are not making everyone else's security worse by connecting. That's essentially the situation you're in with iOS as well. So not only is it not possible to do what you're trying to do, there's just no way we can recommend using an outdated OS with known vulnerabilities, when fixes are available, when were talking about using 1Password to keep us more secure; there's a contradiction there that just cannot be reconciled. :(

Do you mean completely impossible, or just in my case due to the old iOS application I am using? I actually meant that the macOS application would be the one that writes the "backup file" to Dropbox, unrelated to the iPhone.

So my iPhone and macOS device shares the data through your servers and the 1Password account, then the macOS application writes the file for backup only, when needed.

I know the risks of running a jailbroken and outdated OS, and I 100% support that you will not make any accommodations for this. I wouldn't either. However on the question of updating my phone it is a hard no, but I appreciate that you guys take the time to inform users about it (I've seen it come up in other threads as well).

@jonathanson: I mean impossible with regard to Dropbox. There is just no way that an older version can connect to their servers now.

You could do that, copy it to a local vault periodically or something. Just keep in mind that you'll need to do the whole thing each time. Items will NOT overwrite each other when copying between vaults, and this will be a very manual process. I'm trying to think of other options, but they are all pretty bad (WLAN Server). What is the function the Dropbox vault will serve? Maybe that will make a difference.

I hear you. No problem. I hate to be such a pain about it, but people of many different technical backgrounds may read this. Thanks for understanding.

Oh so it would be a manual (or scripted) thing then? Meaning there is a stored vault somewhere already for the 1Password account (when I then get one of those) to copy over? I thought it was something that was more or less always online.

The file would be more for peace of mind of having it myself somewhere.

@jonathanson: Mmm yeah. There's a local cache of the data, but it is not going to be useful for you. There would be no way to restore data from that. You can, however, access your data through 1Password.com (and item history) even if all your devices are lost, stolen, or destroyed.

Gotcha. Then I'd definitely go with either an OPVault where you copy the data, or export a 1PIF to an encrypted disk image. The latter would be easier, as you wouldn't have to manually copy to separate vaults, and could be imported back into 1Password directly. Just not sure that's what you had in mind.

I see. Are there any plans to be able to do it more smoothly through the application itself at some point in the far future? Like a tickbox "store 1password membership data into a secure opvault file at location x/y/z".

Either way, thanks for the information.

@jonathanson: Sure thing! We'd like to make it possible to do a local backup of the data. I'm not sure what form that will take, but it's definitely on our radar. Cheers! :)

Hey @brenty. In your comment above, you wrote this:

However in this other thread [0] it is stated like this

It does indeed seem you have an outdated version. Membership requires v6.5.3:

I just started to subscribe to membership so that I could sync properly which now doesn't work at all on my iOS device. Does this mean the plans changed and older versions are now cut off from the servers/syncing/memberships?

Or have I misunderstood something about what 'disable server access' meant?

There is a version floor for 1Password membership now (v6.5.3 on iOS). It is important to keep both iOS and 1Password up to date. For what it’s worth we also do not support running 1Password on jailbroken devices.

Again I understand all these requirements. I just wanted to make sure whether or not I misunderstood or just had technical issues. Thanks.

Another question. Is it possible to sync a membership account to the device via WIFI sync? I mean like this.

Laptop - Signed in to account
Phone - Pulls entries from laptop via WIFI

No. 1Password.com vaults are part of the account. Local vaults, which you could use with WLAN Server, are completely separate. So you'd literally have to have a separate local vault — completely unrelated to your 1Password.com account — in order to use WLAN Server (or any other sync option). I hope this helps. Be sure to let me know if you have any other questions! :)

Fair enough. I suppose I'll look into iOS 11 then sooner or later. Thanks!
