Hello, I have a learning disability. I need help figuring out how to use 1Password.

I downloaded it free for 30 days, and it's on my dock, and I thought I was doing things correctly, and I read the info on the website about how to do this on a Mac, and how to download extensions or something to use with Safari, but I'm so confused now!

Here is what I copied from my iMac in case you need it...
I am on a desktop iMac that is running Mavericks and it has 1 TB memory on the HD and is configured with an extra 16 GB of memory.

I've looked at the YouTube videos, I have read all the stuff on your website, but I need someone to explain it to me so I know I'm using it okay.

Some other things: when I look at my 1Password window, it has my emails listed, but how can I change the order of them so the most used is at the top of the list? I actually have my emails under "logins" instead of emails.

I really do need step by step instructions, with visuals, to learn how to use this. For example, once I log out of Safari, do I have to Quit 1Password?
Later, if I log back into Safari, and go to read my email, do I again have to enter my Master Password? Can I just click on the email I have listed in the Logins popup for 1Password?

I am so sorry to be so dense. That's what a learning disability does--you can do just enough to be confused!!

Thank you.

P.S. I do have the Safari extensions downloaded correctly as it shows up in my Safari - Preferences - Extensions (box is checked for Enable 1Password).

    Hi @NotABrainiac‌

Thanks for taking the time to write in to us, and for giving 1Password a try to keep your digital life secure and organized. The questions that you are asking are common for new users - we'll get this sorted out for you no problem!

First of all, let me see if I can clarify things a bit for you. There are two main things that 1Password can help you with:

    • Saving your login information for all those sites that require you to sign in every time you visit, and
    • Helping to generate strong passwords when you want to update your current login information or log in to a new site.
(There are plenty of other cool features, but these are probably the ones you're most anxious to get started with!)

To save your current login information in 1Password:

    • Make sure that the 1Password browser extension (https://agilebits.com/browsers/index.html) is installed on your browser
    • Visit a site and log in as normal
    • 1Password will ask to save the username and password for that site (this happens most of the time, not quite always) - when you are asked to name the site, it helps to make sure the name is unique and memorable so you can find it in your list later!

Once a login is saved, all you need to do to login to that site again is:

    • Click the extension icon (looks like a key) and unlock if needed.
    • Once unlocked you can click the item for the site, it will open the site and log you in automatically.

(Please note, we're working hard so that this is as automatic as possible, but some websites don't play as nice with 1Password as others.)

You can also use 1Password to generate strong passwords for you:

    • Go to the "change password" page of the website (this location depends on the way the website is set up, but it's often under the account settings section).
    • Copy and paste your current password from 1Password into the ‘current password’ field (if there is one)
    • When you are presented with the fields to change your password, you can click the 1Password extension, and choose the password generator (the icon that looks like a combination lock) to create a custom random strong password.
    • Click the Fill button.
    • After filling it on the webpage, 1Password should then prompt you to update your saved login for this site.
    • If 1Password does not prompt you to update your Login, that strong password you just generated has been saved to your clipboard by default when you clicked 'Fill', so all you have to do is open your Login in 1Password and paste the new password in the appropriate field!
    • Please note, that new password is also saved under your Passwords tab automatically until it is safely moved into a Login entry.

I know it might sound complicated to begin with, but once you get used to the workflow, 1Password can make your browsing experience infinitely simpler - and more secure!

For example, once I log out of Safari, do I have to Quit 1Password?

You can leave 1Password running on your computer all the time if you would like. In fact, 1Password 4 has a handy feature called 1Password Mini that will allow you access to all of your 1Password data even if the main app is closed.

Later, if I log back into Safari, and go to read my email, do I again have to enter my Master Password? Can I just click on the email I have listed in the Logins popup for 1Password?

1Password has a variety of lock settings so that you can choose how frequently you have to enter your Master Password. You can find these settings in Preferences > Security. If you are using a home computer you might feel ok with setting 1Password to lock less frequently so that you do not have to enter your Master Password as often as if you are using a laptop in a public place, or a computer that is used by many people.

I'll stop now, because this is already a long response, but please let me know if you have any more questions - we're here to help! :)

Thank you so much for your explanation! I am sorry you had to stop because it was a long response, but it was very helpful for the way my mind processes information, and I appreciate the step-by-step information you put in your reply. I will study it more when I return home, and use it to become more familiar with everything. Thank you again!!!!

    Hi @NotABrainiac‌

My apologies, I stopped because I didn't want to overwhelm you ... not because I'm lazy. :)

Please don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions!
