So stay with 1PW 4. In fact, you have no alternative.

And the answer to your question is that 1PW 5 uses features only available in Yosemite.

If you haven't yet bought 1PW but are wondering whether to buy, then 4 is still available, but it has to be bought from the web store, which means you won't get iCloud sync in future.

Hi @dprb‌ danco is spot on with why, two of the probably most significant changes to 1Password 5 are keeping up with Apple's recommended UI practices (so 1Password 5 looks like a Yosemite or iOS 8 app) and iCloud syncing has changed to keep pace with Apple's changes.

As of Yosemite and iOS 8 (only) there is the new iCloud which includes amongst other parts, iCloud Drive and CloudKit, the new framework for syncing data over devices. It has been designed by Apple to make up for a lot of shortcomings in the previous version but unfortunately CloudKit is only available to devices running either Yosemite or iOS 8 and by apps purchased either via iTunes or the Mac App Store - it has become more restrictive but this is Apple's call.

Saying that, Dropbox works between the different versions so you can happily run 1Password 5 for iOS for example with 1Password 4 for Mac if you simply don't want to dance the .0 step (I think that's meant to be a pun) of Apple's new OS.

When you eventually/possibly decide to give Yosemite a chance, 1Password 5 will be available to you.
