Hello!

Can you provide the latest information on what I should do to ensure my 1password vault is backed up? I understand it's sync'd, which is good, but as with many before I'd love to make sure it's picked up by my regular backup too.

The information here https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/48282/i-would-like-to-backup-my-1password-data-to-a-flash-drive-this-is-mentioned-in-one-of-your-articles is incorrect now: there is no "Backups" tab on the preferences.

The information here seems incomplete or inaccurate: https://support.1password.com/backups/ because 1) it's not possible to tell what those automatically created local vaults are (and which files I need to capture to ensure they're backed up) and 2) the File > Backup menu doesn't exist, and as mentioned above the preferences window does not have the backups tab.

Is there somewhere to go that has up to date information?

    Hi @swieton,

Thanks for writing in with your concerns about how backups work.

From your description is certainly sounds like you're in Accounts-only mode (the absence of a backup tab/menu item, you also wouldn't see Sync or WLAN Server tabs), which is to say that all your vaults fall into the first section on https://support.1password.com/backups/. Your data and recoverable item change history are both accessible by logging into your 1password.com account via your web browser.

While there is a local cache of your data from the server for offline use, it isn't what we consider a local vault under "Your local vaults are backed up automatically on your Mac" or "You can also create and restore backups of local vaults". If you do want to make sure your local cached version of the data from your 1password.com account is backed up to your regular local storage, you can certainly do that.

The data resides in one of two places depending on whether you're using the Mac App Store version or the one downloaded from our website: (Mac App Store: ~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/Library/Data) or (AgileBits Store: ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Data).

So based on my reading of https://support.1password.com/backups/ it looks to be up to date, though we could possibly make it more clear what we mean by local vaults (only exists on your machine, but optionally synced using Dropbox, iCloud, Folder, or WLAN).

Let us know if you have any additional questions and have a great weekend!

    Rudy
