Suggestion - Update Field-Names (Usability Problem)

I went to the "EasyList" forum and registered at this page.
The URL of the registration is: https://forums.lanik.us/ucp.php?mode=register
1Password filled my Identity and I generated a password.
When I sent the registration form 1Password created an new Login entry.

Now when I go to the forums https://forums.lanik.us/index.php
and click on "Anmelden" to log in, 1Password does not fill my login data.
Also when I click on the 1Password toolbar icon (in my browser) and select the entry "EasyList Forum".

I know where the problem is:
1Password saved the field names of the registration form (the fields are "username", "new_password" and "password_confirm".
At the login form the fields are called "username" and "password".

I wonder why nothing is filled here (the field "username") should be filled at least.

I changed the stored URL in 1Password to https://forums.lanik.us/index.php
but this did also not help.

Now I have different ways what to do.

Create a new entry:

  • Copy the Title, the Notes, the Username and the Password into Notepad
  • Delete the entry in 1Password
  • Enter the login data at the website and 1Password creates a new entry for me
  • Enter all Data from Notepad (the Title and the Notes)
  • Manually enter the Tags (they can not be copied to the clipboard)

Edit the Field-Names in 1Password:

  • Inspect the source code of the page and find the login fields
  • Copy the names of the fields in 1Password
Note: normal users without programming skills will not be able to do this.

Create a new entry (for the fields names):

  • Copy the Username and the Password into Notepad
  • Delete the entry in 1Password
  • Enter the login data at the website and 1Password creates a new entry for me
  • Copy the field names from this new entry to Notepad
  • Delete the new created Login entry
  • Recover the old Login from the trash
  • Update the field names

All ways mean a lot of actions.
I have a solution for this mess.

When I go to the login form and copy and paste the login data into the login form (click on the button "Auto-Type" behind username and password) and send the form, then 1Password should ask me if the existing entry should be updated.
If I select "Yes" then the new login fields are added to the existing entry.

1Password Version: 4.6.0.604
Extension Version: 4.5.9 (Mozilla Firefox)
OS Version: Windows 10 Pro

    Hi @OLLI_S,

This is one of our difficulties with trying to save new Login items on the registration forms, rather than the login page. We have some ideas on how to improve this but it may not happen for a while.

What we usually tell people is to update the existing Login item on the Login page, like so:

    1. Go to the site's login page, type the username/password fields manually as you did but do not submit the form yet
    2. Click on the 1Password button in the browser, select Settings > Save New Login and use the dropdown to select Replace (existing login item)

    @MikeT Thank you, that helped.
And this in an other feature I miss in other password manager.
You really have an excellent tool!

    Hi @OLLI_S,

That's very kind of you to say that, hopefully, we get everything improved for you soon.
