"Family Name" when signing up for a Families membership?

In the first page of the sign up process for a family membership, there is a field for putting in a "Family Name" and another field for putting in an email address. What's this "Family Name" for and can I change it later if need be after the membership is set up? Thank you.

    Hi @duelist77

    The family name is the identifier for the membership as a whole (whereas your email address identifies your account within the membership). Most people use their last name, or last name plus “Family.” It can be changed later if needed.
