Here's an idea, not sure how feasible:
The windows/macos app, whenever it needs information from 1password, talks to your phone via bluetooth or network.
Here's how it works:
1. navigate to some form on desktop
2. ask 1password to fill it up
3. 1password talks to your phone, asking for the information
4. your phone goes "beep" and the phone 1password asks to be unlocked
5. 1password on computer gets the info it needs

Advantages:
1. Can unlock 1password with finger on the phone
2. Don't need to store 1password DB on desktop

It's an interesting idea, @yulmathieu, and it is one that we have looked at in various ways. The sad news is that with current Bluetooth technology this is hard to do in a sufficiently secure and reliable enough way to meet our needs for security and reliability.

Apple's Handoff infrastructure looked more promising in terms of security, but it isn't designed for the kind of back and forth communication needed for the sorts of features that we would like.

So this is the kind of thing that will sit among the ideas that we are mulling over, but will probably wait for some advances in some of the basic infrastructure before we can really act on it.

Simpler idea: unlock 1password on laptop by unlocking it on phone, a bit like the Google 2FA app

  • That too is something that we’ve looked at but have not yet found a way to make happen in a way that we’re comfortable with. Definiely a great idea if we can find a way to make it happen though.
