Forgot Secret Key and Master Password

Hello everyone,

Let me give you a scenario.

Say there is only one person using 1Password and that person forgets their secret key and master password.

How does that person recover the account when that person cannot sign in without a secret key and master password (for the website and the app) ? Is it solely dependent on another person to reset their master password?

Thank you,

  • Hello @sscodyewatson,

An Individual account is secured using the secret key and master password as "secrets" that only the owner of the account will have. This ensures that no one (even us at 1Password) can gain access to the unencrypted data for that account. If an individual forgets their master password or secret key, then there is no way for anyone to prove they have access to the account to reset it.

In the case of a Family, Team, or Business account there are Recovery permissions that can be given to recover another member's access. This is done by creating new "secrets" that will be used when securing member's account data. The members with Recovery permission can use these new secrets to prove they have access to a member's data and can start recovery on it.

I hope that explanation shed some light on why an individual would not be able to recover their own account. If you have questions please let us know.
