AVG preventing 1password for windows install

Trying to install 1Password for Windows...AVG popup notes a virus "Virus found Win32/Heri, c:\Users\rich\AppData\Local\app\7\1password.dll"...

Would very much like to get this back up and running.

  • Hi @RichCoomes,

    Thanks for reporting this.

If you downloaded it straight from our site; https://1Password.com/downloads/, then it is most likely a false positive.

You'll have to report it as such to AVG to have them fix it, here's where you can do so (I did it just now as well): https://www.avg.com/en-us/false-positive-file-form

We automatically run virus scan on each file we build and then compiled file that we upload to our site, so it is clean. Here's the virus scan report on 7.2.617 here.

Once you report the false positive, try to configure AVG to whitelist your 1Password files. It looks like you can find it in Settings > General > Exceptions according to this help article from them: https://help.avg.com/en/avg_free/17/settings_general.html

  • Hi @RichCoomes,

Just an FYI; AVG got back to me and confirmed the false positive. It's already fixed in the most recent update but it may take 24 hours for the fix to show up.

I am still having this problem. Today's date is 12/31. Please help. I have been trying to setup 1PW for weeks lot's of problems.

  • Hi @SteveKunst,

    Are you using AVG?

Try to update AVG first, uninstall 1Password via Control Panel and install the latest version from here: https://1Password.com/downloads/

Using AVG. AVG is current. Uninstalled 1PW and installed 1PW. AVG still says it's a threat.

    Hi @SteveKunst,

Unfortunately, you'll have to report it as false positive to them here; https://www.avg.com/en-us/false-positive-file-form

You'll also have to manually whitelist 1Password files to let it install with this guide: https://help.avg.com/en/avg_free/17/settings_general.html

We're waiting to hear back from them about preventing false positives for good but so far nothing yet.

What file should I whitelist? If I search my computer I find one Setup file in my downloads folder and a 1Password.exe file in another folder. AVG wants me to point to a specific file. Keep in mind the AVG "rejection" happens during the installation of 1PW.

  • Hi @SteveKunst,

    The AVG guide says you can exclude the folder;

In the Exceptions panel, you can exclude certain files, folders, or URLs from scanning.

You don't see the option to exclude the %LOCALAPPDATA%\1Password\app folder?

OK I didn't know that I should look for something in the "Exceptions panel". This is what I found there. Close but not the same as you indicated in your last post.

    Hi @SteveKunst,

Sorry about that, my instruction was reflective of a false infection in the app folder like the original poster here. Your screenshot is not showing 1Password to be a threat but rather suspicious due to what it's doing in the temp installation folder, which as you said, is not the same as the app folder. Once you check to exclude them, AVG should let it continue installing.
