    Hi @WaggaWagga!

I've turned Use Face ID on / off

Did you do this inside the iOS settings, or inside the 1Password settings?

I also have this problem on iPhone XR / iOS (latest).
Auto-lock is set to one hour, advanced settings "at least every 2 weeks".
About half the time, 1Password keeps asking me for the master password
even if I try to use it within a few minutes. Damn annoying!

Also, how can I configure the main screen to SHOW ME the password
that I'm typing? Often if seems to say "invalid password" when I'm sure
I entered it correctly. Although I must admit, I make a lot of typos on
the iPhone screen and this is one of the main reasons I don't want to
type passwords myself because it's unlikely I can type the same thing
consistently three times in a row.

  • Hey @JohnDB

Is this happening within Safari, or within the 1Password app itself? If it is happening in Safari could you please try this for me?

    1. Open the 1Password app
    2. Unlock using whichever method is requested
    3. Return to the home screen and launch Safari
    4. Try using autofill on a website

At step 4 are you prompted for Face ID? The caveat that I think you may be running into here is that in order for Face ID to unlock the autofill interface the 1Password app must be unlocked first.

    Please let me know.

This was happening with the Meetup App.
But now it seems to be working better, and I was asked for the 1Password PIN instead of the master password
after a couple hours of not using the phone.

I haven't enabled FaceID at this time.

Is there a way to get 1Password to offer the "inject button" to other apps which have a password field?
Maybe with a special button on the keyboard, if it doesn't automatically appear?
I'm not sure how this is supposed to work on the iPhone, but I'm expecting (hoping)
it's always available whenever I might need to insert a credential.

Thanks for the update. :) As for broader use... it sounds like you may not have Password AutoFill turned on. That may help here. :)

Use 1Password to fill and save on your iPhone and iPad

I hope that helps. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

Sorry, is that supposed to be a solution?
No, it doesn't help at all.

I already have AutoFill enabled, but it seems not to work.

And what's the deal with these frequent prompts for the master password?
I see a number of cases in this help forum about this topic --
us there a general issue in the software?
And what about my question how to make the master password visible,
so I'm sure I'm typing it correctly -- as it seems to fail rather often?

As a tip, your software should do something "unfashionable" and write a
log file of its actions - which would do a great deal towards diagnosing
these issues rather than the "questions for dummies" style used here.
"Real software" does this (write log files), and the troubleshooting
    benefit is immense.

    Thanks

I already have AutoFill enabled, but it seems not to work.

To avoid conflicts we recommend turning off iCloud Keychain on that screen. I suggested enabling 1Password there as you mentioned:

Maybe with a special button on the keyboard, if it doesn't automatically appear?

That's what the above setting is supposed to do... When iOS's Password AutoFill recognizes you're within a login form for an app or a website it should appear at the top of the keyboard with either a suggested Login item, or a button that says "Passwords." This is an example of what it should look like when AutoFill is enabled:

Is nothing appearing above the keyboard? 1Password doesn't actually control that aspect... that is the responsibility of iOS, though we'd be happy to help troubleshoot to the best of our abilities. Are you using the default keyboard (i.e. the one in the screenshot)?

And what's the deal with these frequent prompts for the master password?
I see a number of cases in this help forum about this topic --
us there a general issue in the software?

There is the situation that I outlined above, where (intentionally) the 1Password app has to be unlocked before it'll be possible to unlock AutoFill using anything other than the Master Password. The reason for this is that AutoFill doesn't have the capability of storing the necessary secret in the iOS Keychain when unlocking. Only unlocking the 1Password app itself can do that. Beyond that, and confusion that sometimes arises from the various settings that are available and how they interact with each other, I'm not aware of any sort of 'general issue' with this.

That said I noticed you mentioned you're not using Face ID, which I believe is the only "Quick Unlock" that AutoFill supports (rather than PIN). Could you please try enabling Face ID in 1Password and see if that helps reduce the frequency of these prompts?

Use Face ID to unlock 1Password on your iPhone or iPad Pro

Alternatively you may be able to work around the biometric limitation of AutoFill by enabling the setting 1Password > Settings > Advanced > Security > Always show lock screen for Password AutoFill. That would cause 1Password's UI to show instead of AutoFill's, and we can prompt for the PIN there.

And what about my question how to make the master password visible,
so I'm sure I'm typing it correctly -- as it seems to fail rather often?

My apologies; I see now that I failed to respond to that question. This isn't something that we offer, though I'd be happy to pass the suggestion along to our team.

1Password does keep logs, and they may indeed help us track down any issue regarding frequent prompts for the Master Password, but they're unlikely to be much help without context. We need to gather some context first, which is why we go through the troubleshooting that we've been doing here in this thread.
