This is more and more common nowadays - a small icon at the end of the password field and when clicking it it toggles between masked **** and the actual text you entered.
BitWarden and KeePass do that for example, and it makes typing long passphrases much more pleasant - if you made a typo, you can quickly see and correct it instead of typing your 20+ chars passphrase again! Many other websites and even Windows itself provide similar functionality.
And with the default being a masked password, it'd be up to the user whether to allow this or not (so if they are in a place where someone may look at their screen, they simply don't enable it).
