What is the best way to handle a situation where for say 15 sites I need to login with single sign on and so store it only once for all the sites pointing to the same login and password?

    In cases like this we would recommend creating a single Login item that has multiple website fields (if needed). For example multiple website fields would be needed if there are Login forms on site-a.com and site-b.com. Each site-a and site-b would need a website field on the item. If instead all of these sites redirect to site.com for the Login form (similar to what you see happen with Google's various services) then you only need one website field.
