I tried to set up OTP on my browser but the instructions are wrong

I went here:

https://support.1password.com/one-time-passwords/

And tried to follow the instructions to set up OTP in my browser. However, there was no visible icon to click on to read the QR code.

I went to the app and was able to find the icon easily and add the OTP, so I don't think it is user error.

(On a completely separate note, on THIS FORM [where I am putting in this issue to ask for help] I tried to lookup both links "How to find 1Password version?" and "How to find extension version?" to give you that information and both links took me to pages describing how to keep up-to-date by upgrading, but they didn't help at all in finding out what the version is to help you there in support: https://support.1password.com/update-1password/ and https://support.1password.com/update-1password-browser/#chrome -- it looks like it tries to go to one page that WOULD be correct and then redirects to these pages which is unhelpful.)

    Hi @pbowers!

And tried to follow the instructions to set up OTP in my browser. However, there was no visible icon to click on to read the QR code.

What website are you trying to enable 2FA for exactly? We can certainly take a look if you can share where this is happening.

For this first link, you can read this at the beginning of the article:

Open and unlock 1Password, then choose 1Password > About 1Password to see:

    • the version number

There is also a screenshot which shows you where to see the version of 1Password for Mac:

For the browser extension, once you follow the instruction in this link, you can click on the Details button below the 1Password extension, to see all information about it, including the version number :+1:

I was trying to set up OTP for Amazon.com. Out of curiosity, does it matter? When I read the original support article the impression I got was that when I added an OTP field it would have the QR icon there and the QR icon wasn't there - does it matter which site I was logging into?

    re: https://support.1password.com/update-1password/

Look at the "Windows" tab there - nothing at all helpful related to finding the version that I see. When I click over to Mac I do see what you are referring to, but it would never occur to me to click on a Mac tab...

    re: https://support.1password.com/update-1password-browser/#chrome

You're right - it is there. Since the title of the article was "How to keep 1Pass up to date" it didn't occur to me that it would actually be answering the question "how to find your version" and so I didn't read carefully enough - I just installed and so figured any article on updating the extension was irrelevant to me. I would strongly recommend either having 2 separate pages or else change the title to include something about finding the version as well as updating.

Yes, it depends on the website, because the location of the QR code changes based on the website. For Amazon, for example, you can find the instructions on their website here.

Make sure you choose the "authenticator app" option there, as one of the options Amazon offers is also sending OTPs via SMS, which is not secure.

Look at the "Windows" tab there - nothing at all helpful related to finding the version that I see.

Good catch! I will bring this up with the Windows team :+1:

Thank you for the feedback! I will be happy to pass this to the team too :+1:
