Can’t access 1Password 6 as field greys out when the password is entered

Help! I have always been able to use 1Password 6 on macOS and iOS but today on macOS (only) I can no longer access it - the password entry field greys out when the password is entered. It won’t accept or reject the password (which I'm definitely entering correctly) - the interface simply goes dead.

Before this happened, I had installed 1Password 7 but for various reasons I need to revert to 1Password 6.

Any thoughts most welcome.
