2 Different Chrome Extensions for 1Password?

Hi there,

I'm in the middle of setting up a new Mac. When trying to install the Chrome 1Password extension, it looks like I can only find the "1Password - Password Manager" extension from Chrome web store: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/1password-–-password-mana/aeblfdkhhhdcdjpifhhbdiojplfjncoa?hl=en-US

However on my old mac, I'm using this "1Password extension (desktop app required)" which I can no longer find in the web store: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/1password-extension-deskt/aomjjhallfgjeglblehebfpbcfeobpgk/

Is this one being deprecated? If not, what's the difference between these two? Thanks!

@zmxie The first extension is referred to as 1Password in the browser, formerly known as 1Password X. It connects to 1password.com and requires a 1Password account. It is the future of 1Password and probably the best option if you have a 1Password subscription.
The second extension is referred to as the classic extension. It connects to your desktop app and supports local vaults.

It continues to be supported for use with 1Password Release 7 and earlier, but 1Password will not support local vaults from Release 8.

You'll want the classic extension. It works with standalone vaults where the newer 1Password in the browser does not. If you happen to be using one of our memberships, I would suggest 1Password in the browser for its betting filling capabilities.

    Get the 1Password classic extension

    Ah, thanks for the reply.

I do have a 1Password subscription. But with the new browser-only extension, I can't use the default 1password shortcut ("Cmd + \") to autofill passwords in chrome. Instead, the default shortcut is "Cmd + Shift + X" which is a bit confusing.

Can I continue using the classic extension? Or will it be deprecated soon?

  • Hello @zmxie,

The 1Password you have in Chrome is a standalone version that can work independently without the 1Password desktop app. Hence it does not share the same keyboard shortcuts with the app, including the "Cmd+." However, we released an update that allows the 1Password app to work with the 1Password in the browser. Currently, we can use "Cmd+\" to fill websites if you have only one login item on your websites, and we are working hard to make the shortcut fully work so we will have the good old familiar experience back. Please be patient and stay up to date with the latest version of 1Password. That is the best way to get all the fixes and features we offer.

You can continue using the classic extension, but we no longer release new updates, so I recommend you keep using the new 1Password. After giving it some time, I believe you will find it works better than the classic extension.
